ESPN.com is reporting that Randy Shannon is the new head coach at Miami. Shannon was the defensive coordinator down there. He was pretty darn good at that job and I think it's a great hire. I wish I could talk about it more, but Guillermo Mota just resigned with the Mets, so I'm busy with that.
I'll say it again though, smart hire.

At least you're busy with Mota and not with Bonds re-signing for '07 with the Giants.
Give me your thoughts on Barry Zito to the Mets. I know they flirted with him around the trading deadline this summer, but I think he's an even smarter pickup in this off-season as a FA. Here's my question: say the Mets picked him up at the deadline...do they make the Series with him in the rotation?
Well, based on what transpired at the end of the year, getting Ztio at the trade deadline would have been a genius move considering pitchers started dropping like flies for the Mets. I think they would have made the Series, but I don’t know if they would have won it (I know the NL won, but still…).
Mota is an interesting resign…was it the juice that made him good in NY? He was practically lights out after he left Cleveland. If it was, NY is in for a world of pain the next 1 2/3 years.
As far as Bonds, I wish the entire league would have blackballed him. It would have been the boldest move in baseball history. As my friend Tim pointed out, him being at the winter meetings was exactly like Rod Tidwell at the draft in Jerry MaGuire…just sad.
All I can say is poor Randy Shannon. Let's see what happens after he loses his second game next season. Hey, and don't know if you read the south Florida papers but they said Schiano rejected the job because Miami refused to lower its standards. Now, I went to grad school at Miami and I can tell you first hand that academics are the last thing that come to mind. This becomes even clearer when you interact with the students. Can anybody say "Palm trees, sunshine, south beach, and key lime pie?"
