Championship Weekend

By Adam Abramson

I saw ABC’s feeble attempt to promote “Championship Saturday” with back-to-back-to-back games, but it just didn’t do it for me.

“WIN AND YOU’RE IN” it said…however, that’s not exactly the case for UCLA. Think the provost out there could pitch a false advertising suit? Eh, probably not.

Two of the three best games are not on ABC on Saturday.

I do wish LSU could play Florida for the SEC title because I think those are the two best teams in the conference right now, but you can’t always get what you want.

Rutgers-West Virginia will actually be a good game…two good defenses, two good rushing offenses, BCS bid on the line for Rutgers, the rabid Mountaineer fans…should be a big party.

I am kind of excited about Nebraska-Oklahoma because of what that rivalry used to be and how Saturday could be the revival of it (although if Texas keeps recruiting the way it does, it’ll continue to be the class of the Big 12).

Before I get into the picks, I just wanna give big ups to the Chippewas for taking the MAC title on Thursday night with a big win over Ohio. That one-handed catch on the sideline was, as Pedro Cerrano would say, “beautiful man.”

Here are the big games this weekend and my picks:

No. 2 USC (-13) at UCLA
USC is going to let America know there should be no controversy about the Trojans playing Ohio State. I’m watching some old episodes of Ali G right now…so “USC WILL CRUSH” by more than the 13 its laying.

No. 4 Florida (-3) vs. No. 8 Arkansas
Florida has been more proficient on offense and defense than the Razorbacks this year. When a better offense and defense plays a lesser offense and defense, the better generally wins. I like Florida to cover.

No. 19 Nebraska vs. No. 8 Oklahoma(-3)
Nobody has overachieved more than the Sooners this year. Really, OU’s only legitimate loss was to Texas. I know Nebraska’s defense has been subject this year, but I like the Cornhuskers to rise to the occasion and snag its first BCS bowl since 2001. IS NIIICE.

No. 13 Rutgers at No. 15 West Virginia (-10)
Man, that’s a big line. This is such a tough game to pick. I like Rutgers to cover, I just don’t know if the Knights can win. If Schiano’s boys can throw the ball, they could win this game. What the hell, I like what I’ve seen from Rutgers’ defense this year, I’ll take the Knights to go to the Orange Bowl.

No. 16 Wake Forest vs. No. 23 Georgia Tech (-2.5)
I like the Yellow Jackets to cover. Plain and simple.

As for me, it’s back to Virginia this weekend. I just can’t get enough. Enjoy the games.
