Mangini to Cleveland
Eric Mangini landed on his feet quite nicely, and quickly. And good for him.
ESPN has reported that Mangini just agreed to a four-year contract to coach the Browns. He is expected to be introduced tomorrow (Thursday) morning.
The pertinent question here is how many members of his old Jets staff does Mangini target. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported today, before the hiring, the Mangini had already taken a serious look at receivers coach Noel Mazzone and quarterbacks coach Brian Daboll. Bill Callahan is a possibility, though what's interesting about Callahan is he didn't meet Mangini until before this season. Callahan was recommended to Mangini by GM Mike Tannenbaum. More on all that in the coming days obviously.
Ok, carry on with the Rex Ryan discussion. Or this one. Or something else.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Now i REALLY hate Favre
I hear they don't even have diapers in Cleveland
Mangini's Baby, just please don't tell me you're going to start posting
on one of the Browns reporters' blogs. I haven't released you yet from your
contract.
How do I find a Browns website to warn them ? LOL
Who am I kidding, the guy will become a genius over there with our luck.
I am not sure why everyone loves the RYAN pick ????
He had some of the BEST defensive players of our generation playing for him......Our defensive talent cannot do near what they are capable of.
Not saying he is a bad choice, but lets not get all giddy!
Erik,
Thanks for all the great work you do... this is definately the best JETS blog. How could this team even consider Schottenheimer when he continued to not get the ball to his best play maker (L. Washington). It took the media and the fans questioning to get him touches in the last game.
I know your consumed with the HC position, but do you have any information on the Vilma and Robertson trade picks? If I'm not mistaken the Pete Kendall pick comes in this years draft as well??
He can have the entire staff with the exception of Westhoff!!!!!!
EBola, as I have stated before, the baby bleeds green and white (yet, ironically, poops in brown and orange), and will remain loyal to the Jetties. Until Grandpa Woody moves them to Monaco, or Gstaad, or some other tax haven.
Sorry I haven't posted in a few days. I learned that a good portion of my christening gift money was with Madoff. I ain't happy.
Meh, I'm not too committed to anyone on this staff, and I imagine a new coach will probably want to bring in most of his guys anyway. I'd love to keep Callahan and Westhoff, but a new coach can do whatever he wants.
Hey, this may not be a done deal yet. They put me in my crib but i can hear lots of screaming downstairs. Mom is saying you can take me to Cleveland but the only way I can get you to take me out to dinner is to get a Soprano's walk on? My oldest brother, Fredo Mangini, is threatening to move in with Joe Beningo, says Benigno has a futon too...and a Wii. My Aunt Mortadella is over too, screaming in italian and I think she threw her rosary at dad. I'll send more updates if I can. I feel like Bernie Shaw under his bed in Iraq when Bush the Dad started bombing!
Erik,What are your thoughts on Mangini landing in Cleveland? Do you think he will be successful there? Just wondering since you actually worked with him(well not really but you know what I mean)
Mangini's Baby we will never let you go to Cleveland.
Damn I almost fell off the chair with your "the baby bleeds green and white (yet, ironically, poops in brown and orange)" comment.
PRICELESS!!!!!
FIRE MANGINI go to this link and warn the Browns fans what they are in for lol.

I liked Mangini I just think he had a bad DC and an old gunslinger QB whose time has passed.
OK Jet fans, do we want to take bets on who will get to The Super Bowl
first, Mangini or the Jets?
As Fire said, Jets luck.
Boy, I would have liked to be a 'fly on the wall' for that Mangini presentation to Lerner.
What I really would have loved to hear was all about Mangini's "Lessons Learned" and "What To Do About Them"...!
Frank, would you give me odds on a tie? Neither will ever make the Super Bowl.
When Mangini was hired by Jets, my buddy predicted he would be here three years, learn on the job, get fired, then take over for Bellicheat when he retires and win a Super Bowl there.
With Spy Gate, guess he decided to follow in his mentors footsteps in CLE instead, probably with the same results.
After watching him for three years I believe he has serious uncorrectable flaws as a HC, he simply has no feel for the game, no instinct for the NFL game.
So I am not in the least bit worried about him winning a Super Bowl in CLE.
Listen, here's a scoop for you: The real reason EM became Cleveland's HC so suddenly was because this fan out there kept lobbying for him to get the job on a Browns' sports blog. The guy's name, of course is HIRE MANGINI.
Erik, I love you but I think you're defending Woody too much. Granted the handling of Cowher is debatable. But there has been a pattern of organizational and football-related mistakes that point to Woody Johnson's ineptitude as an owner.
I could give you a Top Ten list of his greatest blunders in 2008 that prove this guy can't get out of his own way. But, if I had to choose one blooper to epitomize Woody's pathetic involvement in the dealings/demise of this franchise it would be his Alice-in-Wonderland press conference firing Mangini, while extolling his virtues and promise as a coach.
I ask my fellow bloggers to nominate their choice of what Woody has done to damage the Jets or alienate the fan base the most.
By the way, guaranteed the one gift that Woody got for Christmas that'll never be used is a daily planner.
Gotta agree with Wayne 80. The list of ex-Jets head coaches who subsequently wallowed in failure is legion. Think Walton, Coslet, Kotite and most recently Herm.
I am mystified by the Browns infatuation with Mangini, though not quite as puzzled as I was by the Chiefs' coveting of Herm. Mangini was not a bad coach, but he certainly did not distinguish himself during his time here. Ultimately I think his failure to pull the trigger on Sutton, as well as his inability to right the ship that had obviously gone of course, sealed his fate.
Overall, I do not think Mangini's body of work justified another HC position so soon after his failure with the Jets. He's a nice guy and I wish him luck, but he's no genius in the mold of Belichick. I will lose no sleep over his defection to Cleveland.
Favre speaks
Favre says he’s a team player, will decide whether to return later
OAK GROVE — Brett Favre, disappointed by comments made by teammate Thomas Jones, said he wasn't going to respond.
Favre, the former Southern Miss standout, just completed his 18th football season in the NFL and his first with the New York Jets.
Instead of preparing for the playoffs, Favre spent a few minutes with the Sun Herald on Wednesday looking back on a season that went from promising to disappointing. The Jets bolted to an 8-3 start but finished 9-7 and out of the playoffs.
AP FILE PHOTO New York Jets quarterback Brett Favre said he will take some time before deciding whether to try to play a 19th season next year.
*
First, Favre voiced his opinion on Jones, the Jets running back who recently criticized the NFL’s three-time MVP. Jones, in an interview in New York, said he felt Favre should have been replaced in a season-ending loss to Miami after he threw three interceptions.
‘’As for as Thomas, I have not seen the comments,’’ Favre said. “To be honest, I am not worried about the comments, either. Was Thomas backed into a corner or in a bad mood when he said those things? I don’t know but ripping Thomas is not my nature.
“The bottom line is I didn’t play well in the final five games. It starts with me and it should. I am not ripping Thomas because that is not my nature. My expectations of myself are high and the only one that I let down was myself.’’
Jones also said Favre distanced himself from his teammates, something the quarterback denies.
“I am not going to let one or two guys ruin a career for me or the relationship I had with my teammates,’’ Favre said. “If you poll my past teammates, I bet 90 percent would say they enjoyed playing with me.
“I am not so insecure as to let the comments bother me.’’
Favre joined the Jets after what he called an emotional offseason in which he hoped he would return to Green Bay. When those plans didn’t work out, Packers general manager Ted Thompson traded the future Hall of Famer to the Jets.
That gave Favre little time to learn the new offense, which he says is no excuse, while adjusting to new teammates and coaches.
There may not be a Round Two.
“I wished I had played better in the last five games,’’ Favre said. “I knew what I was up against when I got to New York.
“When I got traded, I thought it was worth a try. I gave it my all. It just didn’t work out.’’
Favre also said a torn bicep tendon in his throwing arm will no require surgery and will not affect him in future.
As far as retiring or returning, Favre was direct.
“I feel the same way as last year,’’ he said. “I will take some time and make my decision. I do know that I enjoy being at home.’’
Some comments from PFT
FAVRE WATCH 2009 COMMENCES
http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/07/favre-watch-2009-commences/
We continue to believe that Favre and the Jets will shift around the pawns, bishops, and rooks regarding whether he “retires,” or whether the Jets release him. Either way, the Jets need to clear his $13 million salary by the start of the 2009 league year.
The Jets surely prefer the retirement route. Though, in theory, Favre could unretire in July and thrust the team into the seventh level of salary cap hell, Favre knows that his legacy wouldn’t survive a second effort to strong-arm his way out of town.
So we think he’ll ask for an unconditional release before the date on which the Jets must be in compliance with the 2009 cap, and if the team won’t release him, then Favre will defer his retirement decision until after the bean counters’ annual day of reckoning has come and gone.
The options for the Jets will be to clear $13 million by releasing Favre, or to dump a bunch of other players to make room for Favre’s salary — only to have Favre thereafter retire.
Our guess? Favre will “retire” from the Jets, but he’ll have in his back pocket the ability to unretire and join the team of his choosing. Most likely, a team that plays the Packers twice per year.
I thought the Jets cleared Farve's 13 mil for the cap?

I am looking forward to the next CLE JETS game...I agree with the comments about EM, no emotion, no feel for the game, good luck with the Browns, I think the JETS made the right move.
I like Woody as an owner, too bad the Westside Project died.
Seemed like he did everything he could, NYC let him (and the JET fans down).
Only mistake I can see if the trading for Favre (I am sure EM signed off)
Give him a pass on the press conference, trying to be Politically correct.
I'm not surprised Mangini was first choice at Cleveland. Randy Learner is much, much smarter than Woody. I'll take the bet on Mangini to make the superbowl before the Jets. I'm off to the Dawg Pound....nice knowing you guys.

If Mangini gets Rob Ryan as DC, I'll be interested to see if the Browns start blitzing the QB more than the Jets did. Also, will Brady Quinn be Opening Day starter. Remember, when a new coach comes in who didn't draft a QB in the first round, they are not married to that guy. Third, what will the Jets do? This really seems as if they have no plan. Coordinators are 50-50 when they take HC spots. Having said that, if they go coordinator route, go Rex Ryan and build a strong, fast, attacking D, then try to build a solid QB. It is much easier to develop a rookie QB with a strong D when they don't have to win the game, just not lose it. See Ben Roethlisberger, See Joe Flacco.
With Grimm on tap for today's interview, I'm seeing another
angle to his candidacy. Yes, Cowher is endorsing him, but after
a Tuna, and a Penguin, is it time for a Hog? Just think, we can wear
green pig noses to games!
Seriously though, if we lose Callahan to Cleveland, I'm sure Grimm
can pick up the slack as he knows a bit abouth the O line.
Read this story in today's Miami Herald (the Baby is very web savvy)
http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/story/838821.html
We still have a shot at The Tuna.
Follow up on last night. Dad seems to be packing. Mom isn't. Kitchen looks like someone threw a plate of spumetti against the wall. By the way it shattered and scattered it seems to have been thrown with great force, leading me to believe that it was not thrown by Brett Favre nor Brad Smith. And my Uncle Clemenza is here now, said something to Dad about a Sicilian Message, whatever that is.
Mike from Foxboro, Queens tried to pitch the Shea sit to Woody after the west side died. It was a sweet deal for the Jets, and would have been great for their real fanbase here on LI. Unfortunately, he and Cross gave them lip-service and instantly went with the Meadowlands deal.
Same ole Jets.
Erik, as a Cleveland fan and not just the favorite butt of Mangini's press conference jokes, how do you feel about the hiring? Take off the reporter invisibility cloak for a second.
Once again I must say, the bloggers on here are the best....Daily doses of laughs. Some ?'s..Mangini'sbaby, did you get a laptop for Christmas? Or do you climb up on the chair and use the PC? And how do you feel about your middle name? Next year it could be legally changed to Brady....
FireMangini, is there a doubt Mangini will succeed, cmon, we are the Jets...
I heard some Cleveland writer on ESPN radio last night who said Jets QB coach, Brian D will probably be Browns OC.
One thing that is hard to figure, didn't the Browns interview Pioli? I realize Mangini and he could not work together, so the Browns chose EM over Pioli? Is this the way it went down? I have been so focused on Jets search(but have yet to be interviewed).
One more thing, I am start to lose a little respect for Benigno. While I love his Jets passion, I heard him say the other night, 'The Jets coaching search is a disaster'.....WHY? Mangini has been the only one hired, and I don't think we were going to hire him...Let's see what the results are before we start bitc#ing, then we can start to bit#h...I hope Westoff stays too, but as for the other coaches, is anyone really upset if any of them go....

I wonder what his bitchy wife Julie says about leaving NYC for Cleveland. Even though her brother lives there it is still culture shock and don't be surprised if she balks.
"I ask my fellow bloggers to nominate their choice of what Woody has done to damage the Jets or alienate the fan base the most."
His biggest mistake was donating money to the campaigns of the wrong politicians. Had he greased the correct palms, the Jets would be playing in the West Side Stadium in 2010.
Yo,
When are we gonna find out that the real reason Woody Johnson flew to Arizona was to have a power luch with John McCain--the other loser Woody backed last year.
When he wasn't pushing for Favre and selling PSLs and our big shot owner was in charge of raising money for McCain's campaign. (Look, when you're as smart of Johnson, you can multi-task on a grand scale.)
Don't be fooled. I'm afraid this meeting was set up weeks ago. The visit to Arizona has nothing to do with Grimm. That's a smoke screen to hide Woody's true purpose and make it seem that he's actively involved in our search for the next HC. I don't know which is worse--him being too involved or not being involved at all. Why the hell doesn't WJ the 4th hire a group of football guys (call them consultants or advisors) and put the operation of the team and all personnel decisions in their hands. Kinda like setting up a blind trust. Let them call the shots. If it means getting rid of Mr. T, or demoting him, or kicking him into some meaningless important-sounding position, so be it. Build a winning team over the next three years. Just write the checks and shut up, Woody.
You know the old expression: Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way. In this case, get out of the way!
Rfeld I can tell you that mom hates her brother Stosh. She told me "If there was a jerk Olympics, Stosh would carry the USA flag in the opening ceremonies."
Upstate, I have a blackberry like that little pisher in the Etrade commercials. That lying bastard, if he's day trading, he's broke.
PS, are tee. Thanks for giving your choice of Woody's worst move. You're right on the money!!!
Mangini signs Rob Ryan as his Defensive co.
Mangini signs Rob Ryan as his Defensive co.
Erik, too many of these guys responding to your blog think that Mangini is a doofus. Not.
What person that you know well has been fired on Monday and then interviews (successfully I might add) on Tuesday to get an equal job -- one of only 32 in the world...?
Randy Lerner seemed like he was waiting to pounce -- I guess that Romeo realized he wasn't long for his Peter Principle, so he put in the word.
Mangini has apparently been working all this out as a quiet response to all the ultimatums and threats from the front office over the past few weeks that are starting to get out now.
Mike Tannenbaum and Mr. Woody Johnson are a bit behind Mangini so far. They have no coach, they have a QB at odds with his locker room, they don't know what really went wrong with this season, and the people that could find out have left and are leaving.
There will be consequences for the players (and therefore the fans) unfortunately. A lot of them will be judged by the new CS who weren't there for the '08 mystery meltdown. The result: Some other NFL teams are going to get some really good ex-Jet players.
All anybody can do is recognize their mistakes and work hard. Apparently Randy Lerner believes sincerely that Mangini is doing just that.
A lot of so-called "pundits" are ranting about the demise of the all-in-control HC who makes the calls for the personnel as well as the football team. Shanahan was fired because he couldn't do it all. Mr. Johnson has made the division of responsibilities a mantra for the NYJs' "strategic search".
As Mangini has been hired as HC first, announcing his OC (Daboll) and DC (Ryan), next -- the general manager hasn't even been interviewed yet by the team. This indicates that precedence will take hold and Mangini will call the shots through his chosen collaborators.
Mangini potentially has more football power at Cleveland than he had in Floral Park with this turnabout, no?
John Z. (and others who have asked), I think Mangini is a good choice for the Browns.
one of the biggest problems with Crennel was a lack of discipline with players and no
structure in the organization. If nothing else, the Browns will get that with Mangini.
If he learns from his problems in NY (and he should, he's only 37 years old),
it should turn out well for the Browns and for him.
As for those concerned about Rob Ryan going to the Browns, getting Rex I think is the
most important thing. Rob has a good reputation but Rex's is better in league circles.
JayM, good call on that site. Jason does a great job with the cap there.
RC Meany, welcome back! When I don't hear from you for a couple days, I
get worried!
Let's clear up a few things about Mangini:
1) He was on the verge of demoting/firing Sutton had Rob Ryan been made available prior to the 08 season (remember Lane Kiffin wanted to get rid of him but Davis vetoed).
2) He was a first time head coach and was going to make mistakes along the way, much like the new HC of the NYJ will make.
3) The defense was not strong enough to overcome Favre's mistakes after Jenkins got hurt at Tennessee. Otherwise, they'd have played Baltimore in the playoffs.
4) Had Jenkins not gotten hurt, the defense would have remained a force and the arguments against Mangini's/Sutton's defense would have never come to light.
5) Reports have Mangini and Rob Ryan linked to the Cleveland DC job.
6) Belichick sucked as a first time head coach. I challenge you to say you wouldn't want Belichick coaching your team today?
differences between Herm and Mangini:
Mangini was a young coach learning on the job in a town that does not tolerate failure - he was doomed from the start.
Herm took a competitive product, and turned it into something found in Mangini'sBaby's diaper; Mangini took that same turd and made it competitive (remember 8-3)
When Herm left, not many players spoke out on his behalf (a few did); every single player quoted in the media has positive comments regarding Mangini
With the offensive talent on the Browns roster, Mangini will field a competitive product in 2009
My inside operatives at Homeland Security have just passed highly classified information along to me via secret computer cable links that I have access to using the password namath12.
According to coordinates picked up by U.S. spy satellites, it appears that a Solara has been spotted traveling west from Florham Park toward Lake Erie. The government is tracking its every movement carefully.
Speculation is that the driver is on a secret mission to become the director of press relations for the Cleveland Browns or possibly even their next GM. This is coming precisely at the time the country is transitioning from Bush to Obama and the Browns are making threatening moves near New York's western border.
Erik, you got anything on this?
Hey, Meany, did the classified information indicate that a futon was strapped to the roof of the Solara? I'm starting to think our blogmaster may have been intentionally sowing discontent among the Jet faithful just so Mangini would wind up in Cleveland, badly in need of someone like Boland. I hereby declare shenanigans!
