The Jets and their, all together now...Identity Crisis

Eric Mangini was asked the “identity” question during this afternoon's press conference concerning his offense.

“I think our identity is the fact that it’s game-plan specific,” Mangini said. “I think that’s really what our identity is and, like I said, it can be heavy emphasis on the run; heavy emphasis on the pass; it could be no-huddle; it could be empty; it could be it’s just not one package.”

Mangini made a fair point in mentioning the extremely young Chiefs' starting secondary as the reason for the pass-first offense, but was later asked if that’s a case of coaches outsmarting themselves, given just how bad KC had been against the run this season.

“Oakland wasn’t particularly strong against the run, and we ran it for 250 yards and scored 13 points, so you can look at it either way,” Mangini said.

There were a few more questions about that, as well as some about Favre’s ballooning INT total.

Mangini all but put the blame on second-year receiver Chansi Stuckey for the Brandon Flowers interception that the cornerback took back 91 yards for a touchdown.

“Yeah, he should have kept going on that,” Mangini said of Stuckey running the route. “Worse-case scenario, if the guy does catch it, you have to be able to make the tackle. It’s a turnover, but it’s not a turnover which results in a touchdown, and he could do a lot better job on that play of finishing that route.”

The typically-pleasant Stuckey sounded a bit annoyed when asked to respond and what he could have done better on the play.

“I mean I could have just, I guess, tried to grab the guy and get an offensive pass interference (penalty) before the ball was thrown because he was in front of me. So that’s really all I could have done.”

Earlier Stuckey, though it wasn’t intentional, seemed to offer an indictment of the predictability of the play call.

“He [Flowers] kind of recognized it from the first time,” Stuckey said. “We had kind of beat them up pretty good on that play in the first quarter on a third down. He recognized it and jumped inside. I tried to get inside him but he kind of game me a little bump that got me off my route and I kind of bumped into the safety and he was just kind of kept running and the ball came right to him and he just made a play.”

* Kerry Rhodes was asked if this week it will be nice to NOT have the same questions of the previous three weeks, meaning about how bad the upcoming team is.

“Yeah,” Rhodes said with a laugh. “Now we’ll come out and now they can tell us how bad we are and take the pressure off us a little bit. It should be fun to be in that role in coming out to have to prove something and not being expected to win.”

Can the Jets play the way they did yesterday and win in Buffalo?

“If we played that way against a lot of teams, it won’t be a good thing, it may not be a good outcome,” Rhodes said.

* Mangini said running back Jesse Chatman, who injured his knee blocking on a second-half kickoff return, is likely done for the season.

“It doesn’t look real good Mangini said. “Odds are it’s going to be season-ending.”

David Harris left the game with what was called a “hip” injury and Mangini, while not getting specific, said it was not the aggravation of the hamstring injury that limited the linebacker much of training camp and the preseason.

“No, it’s not the hamstring,” Mangini said, though he didn’t rule out that it could be a longer-term issue.

“Could be just something that’s soreness, could be something that’s a little longer,” Mangini said. “I don’t really know yet.”

And with that, don't forget Live Chat IX tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 11. Probably a few things to go over.

E-Bo,

Hey do me a favor. Ask our boy Favre why he always seems to wear something yellow with his green.

First the shoulder pads under his jersey, then the towel. C'mon man.

Tell him if he needs a blood donor for some green and white, I'll donate.

Game plan specific? Come on, please. That is true of everyone, but there are a few things YOU always do well. You build off that from game to game and add specifics, but where are the building blocks?

I didn't see the play on the INT from the replays yet (living out west, you know?), but was that really Stuckey's fault? Mangini placing the blame on a young player, if true, could absolutely implode that locker room. Where is the golden boy taking the blame? I know, we have to wait until Wed.

I still have hope for this week, but absolutely no confidence. Like IRA says, it all comes down to this week. A win would do wonders. A well-played loss would be progress at this point, but may only delay things for a week. Unfortunately, I see an ugly loss on Sunday. I hope I am wrong.

Nice to see many of you FINALLY agree with me....Better late then never boys....This coach and GM combo is a complete JOKE!

Tehy tried to be like the Pats....Too bad they are not in same UNIVERSE !!

Mangini is a glorified ball boy that works very hard. Too bad he is NOT a head coach.

He and his chubby buddy GM MUST GO today !!!

They cannot motivate. They cannot scheme. They cannot call plays. They cannot draft. They do NOTHING !!

The experiment is over. Cut the cord. Move on.

Favre deal is horrendous. Going to set the franchise back ANOTHER three years. The first draft pick was HORRIBLE.

I mean wake up Woody Johnson, and if you do not care....SELL THE TEAM !!!

Jet Fans deserve better !

I haven't done it much, but I have to question Mangini for a few things.
1). Run, run, run the ball. How does Leon Washington only get 3 carries for the whole game?
2). How is that 'D' not prepared for the obligatory Herman Edwards 3rd and 10 draw play which resulted in a first down?
3). Why is Favre allowed to throw in the red zone? This guy is going to set a record for INTs inside the red zone which is the easiest way to lose a game.

I do not want Mangini to be fired because this team has spent three years getting personnel to become 3-4 from a 4-3, but when you have the Bengals, Chiefs, Raiders, 49ers, Seahawks, New England twice sans Brady, Miami twice who was 1-15 last year, the Rams and Cardinals, you need to win this division if you want to do anyting.

Stuckinreno - actually, it was Dan Dierdorf, the CBS color commentator who first criticized Stuckey for not finishing his route. Maybe the questioners at the press conference were following his lead.

The truth of the mater is that the jets were out played for most of the game. A few bad calls and a dropped pick six by Johnson let Farve be a hero instead of the zero that he played like!

To all the fans who are complaining about not being able to afford the PSLs I say: Munch! Munch! Munch a bunch of corn chips. Frito's Corn Chips!

Just watched man-idiot's mon press conferenece....let's get Jet posititive specific for a moment. Hodges is doing a fine job, Loved seeing Wallace Wright line up at reciever, he has been a great contributor week in and week out on special teams. Carroll for the second straight week is following his lead. One of them will have a big play in the coming weeks.
The pass protection is awful. I like Lowery (good tackler, just barely getting beat in coverage) they have to find a way to defend the screen. Herm/Thigpen exploited this many times Sunday. Probably the best run defense I've seen EVER.
How sickening is it that this should have been Chad's offense to run?

Hello, just testing this blog to see if it is accepting entries. Testing... Testing... or if it's shut down in anticipation of today's exquisite chat. Semper Futonis et Semper Solara

So i have done a little research and have come up with one thing. The Bills are not that good and the Jets are not that bad. Both teams stats are very even. But the Jets have lost 4 out oftheir last 5 games in Buffalo. The bills have the superior kicking game and right now the better coaching. But i will go with unconventional wisdomand can't believe Favre will play 4 bad games in a row. plus the Jets are the better running team then the Bills. If the jets establish a tru running game this week and don't turnover the ball well here goes. Jets 24- Bills 23

Erik, it's not an identity crisis. It's a Vinny Barbarino moment.

"Where were the adjustments at half time, coach?"

Who?

"Ok, how about the running game?"

What?

"All right, what plans do you have to reduce Favre's interception ratio?"

Where?

"Coach, please! Do you think you'll implement a balanced attack next week at Buffalo?"

Up your nose with a rubber hose! G'night Mr. Kot-ter.

Note to Mangini, its ok to just impose your will on an inferior opponent when you are more talented than that team, no need to try and outsmart the other coach.

Just makes no damn sense, his response to the question about not running against the worst running defense in football is absurd.

DId anyone ask why, on first and ten from the opponent 22, with Farve shredding them through the air and their defense on their heals already down 7-0 they thought it was the perfect time to start running the ball with their 4th string WR and 3rd string RB?

We see if this team has any heart next sunday. So far it appears that they either are lacking heart or their simpleton coach has them so restricted that they play hesitantly. Handling assignments is fine but whenever they just start to be permitted to play with passion and get real blitzing schemes into the game they succeed. Coincidence? He has them so rigid they are reacting instead of using their God given ability and instincts to play.
I have had enough of watching him try to be Bellicheat. We have all seen Brady go out there and make 17 straight pass attempts if the defense dictates it. Then the second half they march down the field with nothing but hand offs. Our coach is trying to hard to use the NE blueprint. We have a farely beefy O-line and should just try to do what the Titans do. Control the game and use a tough defense to create some turnover opportunities.

Boland, I think your site has been taken over by the nay-sayers a bit early this year, given a 4 and 3 record. Better luck next year.
