No practice tomorrow (Tuesday)

The word just came from the Jets: practice is cancelled for Tuesday. This has no effect on your travel plans because you weren't allowed to go anyway. Practice resumes with a double session on Wednesday; at 8:45 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Sharp. Both are open to the public.

This also means no long practice blog from me on Tuesday but I will post something of quality. Well, I'll post something. Carry on with practice discussions/questions either here or in the previous post.

Erik,
Go get some sleep on the "World Famous Futon". You're gonna need it!

I have a question that you can probably stick an intern on for a nice little article. Is the NFL's blackout rule still relevant? What made me think about this was an article on Miami needing to give away a lot of tix to reach the "sellout" and avoid the rule. So what's the purpose if teams circumvent it?

Waiting to hear something from you on the great Clemens vs. Ratliff debate. What's up?

Erik, is newsday looking into finding a way to make your blog more legit by having people sign in first so that way trolls don't keep posting as you, me, IRA, and others? It already caused IRA to leave.

Hope IRA decides to give the blog another chance, his input/opinions are worth reading...as is anyone who keeps Darrell on his toes

Erik, does Chad signing with the Dolphins effect our cap situation at all (ie voids old contract)?

and I don't here my man Nate Lyles getting any action...which could be good (not getting burned) or bad (not getting PT)

Thanks

Deb from NE, the blackout rule is still in existence and it's up to the teams if they want to circumvent it. I mean, most don't have to because all the tickets are bought, but if there are tickets left, teams can give away those tickets - as the Dolphins did - and call it a sellout, as a good-will gesture to their fans. Doesn't happen much but it does happen.

Roger, Ratliff isn't the No. 2 yet. He's getting reps with the 2s but Clemens spent the last half of yesterday's practice working with the 2s. There is no question, however, that Raftliff's performance this camp has the coaches considering that switch and they want to get more of a look at Ratliff. Obviously Erik Ainge could be in danger of getting put stored on IR; perhaps, wink, wink, his pinky is starting to flare up again.

dmb, yes is the short answer. I forwarded both yours and Ira's exchange to the appropriate person yesterday and was told there's something being tried out on that front on another Newsday blog. If successfull, we'll have it here too. And I hope so. In terms of views, this blog is growing every day - a tribute to you all - and losing people like Ira doesn't do anyone any good. But let me know if what we're talking about happens to you again - same to everyone - and I can remove it as I've done with some of mine that weren't mine.

(the real) Mike, yes, Pennington's contract was voided as soon as the Jets released him. The only way the Jets, who I'm told are currently under that cap, would have been responsible for his contract would have been if he was on the opening day roster. As for Lyles, he's out there but with the third team. I have seen him work very occasionally with the second team but he hasn't jumped out. If you're looking for a positive, it's not like he's getting burned every day and picked on, either.

What happened to reports that we would have to cut another player besides Penny to get under the cap? (My dreams of it being barrett have been killed)

Also, whey are the 2 worst CB on our roster competing for the #2 spot? Hank Poteat and Drew Coleman are the 2 most underrated players by Mangini. They don't get beat all the time like Barrett and Miller do, yet because they're not flashy names they get ignored. What's the deal? I'm still waiting for someone to tell my why Drew Coleman can't compete for a starting spot after playing well in every jet game he's ever appeared in. What does a guy have to do to get a chance around here?

For those of you interested, there's a New York Jets Salary Cap web site. Here's the latest tally (as of 10 Aug 08):

New York Jets Salary Cap

NFL Salary Cap Limit: $116,729,000
Jets Adjusted Cap: $121,781,789
($5,052,789 credit from 2007)
Current Estimated Cap Space: $1,176,782

Here's the URL:

notjustQBs, good find on the cap question. I knew they were under the cap, but didn't have the exact figure.

dmb, I'm still convinced Barrett won't start opening day. But, admitedly, not as convinced as I once was.

No offense to the poster, but that Jets cap site if very often wrong, at least it was A LOT in the past, so I wouldn't trust it at all.

dmb, no, I know that site is not official but the general concept of them being under the cap, from what I've been told, is correct.

what positional needs do you think the Jets still have, assuming the O line meshes together, I see none on offense but maybe one or two or D. then again, what do I know, your thoughts?

Erik, haven't heard much about Pouha. How's he looking? Also, what's your opinion on which running backs behind Jones, Richardson, and Washington will make the team?

I was looking at the roster, and there are definetly going to be some tough cuts, especially at CB, WR, and even LB. I'm hoping that both Clowney and Murrell make the team.

MD, I'd say O-line depth is still a concern, though guys like Will Montgomery and Robert Turner have done ok when they've gotten some first-team reps. I'd like to see another cornerback or two jump out at me besides Revis. I think the d-line and linebacker depth has developed pretty well during camp.

Maynard13Titan, Pouha has had a decent camp and typically replaces Kris Jenkins when he gets first-team reps. Mangini likes to work second-team guys who are doing well in with the first team because, like most coaches, he realizes guys will get dinged up and hurt, so the backups need the experience of working with the "1s." Musa Smith has been getting more and more work the last week, as has Jehuu Caulrick, the rookie from Michigan State. They like Jesse Chatman and he had a good minicamp, but he's been hurt recently so that situation bears watching.

Erik, thanks for the rapid response to our questions on this blog. Yet another reason for Ira to come back...

Glad to hear that Nate isn't embarrassing himself (if not distinguishing himself). Don't really think he can make the squad, but we lack depth at safety, and he's a heck of a kid. You should read the strength reports from the NFL combine - he benched more than many D-linemen!

Erik,

If you would be so kind, can you please ask Favre tomorrow to comment on the Gastineau situation? It is very important to us die-hard Jet fans to get some closure on this. Thanks very much.
