Day 6: Morning Practice

Since many of you asked about, and opined, about this – along with my choice of vocabulary – coach Eric Mangini opened his press conference this morning by explaining his thinking of giving players yesterday off.

“In researching the patterns of training camp and researching the trends over the years, what we’ve seen is there’s a dramatic spike of injuries early on in camp and that makes a lot of sense because guys will go from the offseason program to a break and then they come back and they jump right back in to very heavy, high intensity exercise and all the contact,” Mangini said. “So you go right from the break, to the conditioning run to a one-a-day, two-a-day and between fatigue and all the elements that go into it, you have a lot of injuries early in camp. We looked at the different things related to recovery and we planned the day out accordingly.”

Also, Mangini disclosed that backup punter Joe Smith had been waived and Danny Woodhead, who injured his knee last week, had cleared waivers so he has been placed on the Jets injured reserved list. Additionally, the Jets signed WR Rudy Burgess and LB Jerry Mackey, a Syracuse and before that, Freeport High School, graduate.

And for those of you who recalled – and hopefully only a very few of you know this – Smith, that backup punter, was wearing No. 4 during camp. Yes, some witling in the press – it might have been me but I’ll have to check the transcript to be sure – asked Mangini if the roster move had been made to free up Favre’s number.

Um, no.

As for this morning’s 1 hour 50 minute practice, it was a lot of special teams and specialty situation work so there isn’t as much detail to share in the way of in-depth 11-on-11s or even 7-on-7s. But there were a few things from the morning, a lot of which was spent in goal line situations:

*Sixth-round pick Marcus Henry made the best catch he’s made all camp, catching a bullet thrown from the 10 by Kellen Clemens in the back of the end zone with Drew Coleman hanging on him. Henry went high in the air and got his feet in bounds, despite Coleman drawing a flag for interference. Maybe the best catch of the morning. Coleman earned a lap for the penalty.

* Laveranues Coles made great grab in the end zone on a 15-yarder thrown by Pennington during an early goal line shell drill, but it was negated because he had been forced out of the back of the end zone first by Justin Miller, making the catch an illegal touch. Still, good hands by Coles, who during a later 11-on-11 caught a short dump off over the middle for a touchdown by Pennington.

* Again, not a ton to report in terms of throwing the ball because they were working a lot on screens and runs rather than downfield throws. Besides Clemens’ throw to Henry, he also connected with Brad Smith from the 10 on a nice slant play that resulted in 6. A lot of carries from Thomas Jones and Leon Washington and they both saw their share of screens as well.

* Kris Jenkins made a highlight play on the goal line, shedding two blockers at the 2-yard line and just stuffing T. Jones cold on an off-tackle. Jenkins clearly – CLEARLY –is an upgrade over who was in the middle last season and you can see the effects on Ellis and Coleman. I might have neglected to mention it in Sunday’s report because of the focus on Gholston, but after the team moved indoors to the bubble, Ellis had a couple of plays in which he was in the backfield bothering the quarterback.

* Dwight Lowery had outstanding coverage on Brad Smith on a goal line fade thrown by Clemens into the right corner. A series later Darrelle Revis deflected a Pennington pass intended for Bubba Franks in the back of the end zone. I’m already on record as predicting Revis as Pro Bowler this season and have seen nothing this camp dissuade me from that opinion.

* And this was nice to see: a group of 20 kids, ages 8-13, from the St. Joseph’s School for the Deaf in the Bronx attended this morning’s practice. David Harris and David Bowens posed for a group picture and then they, along with several other players, stayed and signed autographs.

Next up: the 5:45 practice.

How come no mention of the Clemens INT? Yet another day = yet another INT from Kellen...

this kid just isn't getting it... let's hope he shapes up and can actually compete for and win the job next year!

GreenGuy, it came during a 7-on-7 drill so technically it's not the same as a full 11-on-11. But you're probably right, I should have had it in there.

After reading the posts here and on Jets fan sites, I read Kellen throws INT's and Chad (is being Chad) with precise and accurate passing game, and people are calling for Chad to take more chances. But after the offseason, with our OL and running game and (in my opinion) will have a very good defense, thats exactly what we will need. A QB thats makes smart decisions and DOES NOT TURN THE BALL OVER. When it is all said and done I think that will determine who whos behind center in Miami.

Boland, i'm hoping you have some downtime in between practices to answer a couple of questions I tried getting into your chat.

1) Can you address the Dline depth. Its not being talked about at all and could be a huge problem for this team. Pouha you've mentioned a little and i'm semi-comfortable with him as the backup NT. But our depth along the DE positions are horrible. Has anyone shined in camp? I was high on Kareem Brown in the draft.

2) Has Bill Callahan implemented a new blocking scheme? Or has he merely tweaked the existing one?

Hey A Dwight Lowery siting! I heard that Miller and Barrett are neck and neck for the no.2 spot so far. What are your thoughts on him making a big impact as the corner opposite Revis. So far I remember the knock on him being his speed but I haven't heard anything in the blogs that have mentioned him getting burnt deep at all.

Erik,

Any chance you can get Leberfield abducted ? That guy must be some pain in the ass in those press conferences.

he does a better job than Chads agent!!!

Any truth to Barrett having a slight edge over Miller. I heard Barrett has been making some nice plays?

Erik,

I was surprised by the upgrade in overall size of both the lines. Maybe it was just me, or the fact that Jenkins is a freakin' beast. Why didn't D'Brickashaw practice this morning? I seen him standing under the tent and he looked fine. Did he win an extra day off for looking 6% larger?

GreenGuy was it you that screamed at Clemens for that interception? I almost choked on my water.

Sorry, in keeping with the higher literary aspirations of this blog: Kris Jenkins was Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

"Any truth to Barrett having a slight edge over Miller. I heard Barrett has been making some nice plays?"

Not funny. And he's been making some nice plays in camp the last few years. Then followed by him getting burned in games day 1. Can't we learn from our mistakes? Why do we always take so long as Jet fans to come to grips when guys just aren't good, Herm, Penny, Barrett, McCareins, etc. Enough with the 2nd, 3rd, and 8th chances. Let's cut the garbage!!

I can answer Duck Dodgers 23rd's question, Boland. Lowery was covering Smith. Smith is not fast. Lowery won't get burnt by covering a wannabe receiver.

As an aside; Clemens is just doing what young QBs who haven't had a full-season to assimilate into an offense do which is make mistakes. Give the kid a little break, guys, he came into a CP offense last year and put up pretty good numbers. Let's see what happens in the pre-season games before we start completely drilling him. I haven't given up hope that he's the answer for the future.

Erik,

That's really the first I've heard about Coles, non-contract, so far. How does he look? I was starting to think last year that he was heading down the Wayne Chrebet / Al Toon retirement path. Seen anything to dissuade me?

Erik, my man, I realize this might be tough to answer so early in camp, but what kind of impact do you think Tony Richardson will have on the running game? I'd have to assume it'd be at least a little significant considering he's a veteran battering ram who has blocked for Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and Adrian Peterson when they had outstanding seasons.

What up people. Working on my newspaper stuff for tomorrow but I'll answer the questions you posted here in my afternoon practice review. Although the thought about "abducting" Leberfeld from Jets Confidential, I probably won't touch that one:)

Erik, Never should've cut Joe Smith this early. They did the same thing last year and i felt Grahan struggle all year because he was over worked or injured. No reason to take all the reps for teh next 4 weeks.
Glad to finally see Henry make a nice play. And yes my man Barrett is hanging in there.Looks like Lowery is going to be a good one.

ESPN is reporting that Favre faxed in his reinstatement letter today.

A few question for the masses.

Is Kris Jenkins that GOOD or the Oline not that GOOD? A huge difference.

Let's not forget this is an even number year and CP usually has a good season on even number years. I'm still pulling for Kellen though, just for the change of pace.

Why aren't you guys getting all over Coles for running out of the endzone and then back in? That is such a rookie mistake and I hope to god he ran some laps for that one!

Why is D'brick on the sidelines? Get his young ass in there and block!

Are the QB's taking turns (changing days) on playing with the ones? It sounds like a lot of Clemens mistakes are when the twos or threes are in there.

Are the starting Oline going against the starting Dline?

Bye for now.

E-Bola - Next time you get a chance to interview Faneca - can you ask him to elaborate on Jenkins? Would love to hear his opinion. Also, Jenkins opinion of Faneca for that matter.

Also - I can't post in Firefox, have to keep switching over to IE - what's up with that? You guys too cool over there for Cross-Browser compatability?

DKnyj said, "Also - I can't post in Firefox, have to keep switching over to IE - what's up with that? You guys too cool over there for Cross-Browser compatability?"

Are you using FF 3.0 or 2.0? I am using FF 3.0.1. and I do not have any problem.

BTW, D-Brick did not practice this morning, because he used his "award" to not to practice in the morning session. He will be back for evening session.

Looks like I'm too cool to check browser updates - Thx Seattle
