« Kicking off Day 2... | Main | More on Dwight Lowery »

Finally, a corner...

But Dwight Lowery? He's a cornerback from San Jose State with this lowdown: a 5-11 1/4" corner who had a much better junior season than senior year. Ran a 4.54 40 at the combine and had a 33 1/2" vertical jump. He's known as a good athlete but not particularly good on run support. Tackling skills have been questioned and, depending on the scout, he's either good or average in coverage. It will be interesting to see if Tannenbaum says whether the Jets traded the 102nd pick after Justin King, the Penn State corner, was taken at 101 by the Rams, catching the Jets off guard. Look at Lowery this way: he would have been a late first-round or second round pick after his junior season. The question is, what happened to him his senior season? Back with more soon...

This is shaping up as the worst draft ever. 1st pick, a guy who couldn't get a sack against Kent State. Then we trade up to get a TE that can't block. Now a corner who can't tackle anyone (Deion Sanders, without the speed). Are there any one legged punters Tangini have targeted? And I thought no one could draft worse than Milbury (who passed on Zach Parise).

Remember when there was a one handed pitcher who threw a no-hitter for the Yankees not too long ago....

just a reminder...

Let's not pretend that any of us really know what the ability of any of these athletes are and how that will translate onto the football field with the other 55 players on THE TEAM performing together.

Ryan Leaf - drafted #1 or #2 whatever it was... there was debate over who should be first him or Manning.

Did any of us know who David Harris was before Vilma got hurt? So please, let's stop fooling ourselves that any of us have a crystal ball and can KNOW what each player will tranlate into as a PRO.

DOC

It's amazing! No wonder why us JET fans get so much flack( the history of our franchise does not help) but all these JET boards have nothing but people complaining..................about everything. They hate the free agents, they hate the picks, they hate the coach. What is with you people? I am sorry that the JETS were not given the first 5 picks in the draft to pick anyone they please and that every team asks the JETS permission to see if it is ok to take a player. Just like DOC said, none of us know who half these guys are so if you are a TRUE fan trust our personal (which can be tough) and support your team. Lets see what happens on the field. STOP THE HATING!

Really surprised they did not take a late 4 or try to get a 5th round pick on John David Booty(JDB). This guy was 9-0 against top 25 teams as USC QB.

I really do not understand the philosophy of this regime this year. Gholston scares me with the John Abraham comparison and how he disappeared in some games and how Phil Simms said he never heard of the guy and Simms watches basically every pro and college game during the week.

This TE that can't block is a bit bizarre as well. And to trade up for him. huh? Give me a break! I think Chad will be the QB this year which is why they made the TE pick.

All I know is that this will be a very interesting year.

Stop complaining and lets wait and see how things pan out. I will tell u one thing, the team cannot be as bad as last year. We had some key off season acquisitions- faneca, jenkins, pace, woody?- would of loved to see them take carl nicks instead of ainge, but need some QB security. With gholston our defensive front 7 has many options on getting after the QB. We needed a key offensive threat, Mcfadded was not there at 6 so i believe they loved keller and possibly thought with jeremy shockey rumors that the giants might take him. He looks explosive, another amazing athlete, great vertical leaping ability. You look at the key TE these days, there smaller, quick - alge crumpler, dallas clark, chris cooley, gates- all around 6'3". Keller might be the fastest guy on our team on the offensive side. We all were hoping for a big WR with that trade up at 30, but we got keller instead, and with our 6th round pick we get a tall WR marcus henry 6' 3 1/2". My biggest fear for next year is that damien woody gets hurt early, who is going to fill in for him? jacob bender? thats why i was hoping for OT carl nicks with our 5th round pick, mel kiper had him as the best available and some draft boards had him going in the 3rd round, in the top 10 OT as well as being coached by our new offensive line coach.

The scouting reports I read said his number went down his senior year because teams were throwing away from him since we is excellent in coverage and a ballhawk. I heard that the main reason he fell is the speed issue.

Can't Jet fans stop complaining for 2 seconds. We got a guy with a nose for getting to the QB, a TE compared to Dallas Clark (a guy who can get over the middle and be our 3rd down guy like chrebet used to be) - which everyone is complaining we didn't pick up a wr and then they're complaining that this guy can't block and is basically a really big wr, and a corner with a lot of potential who will add some depth but we don't have to be that invested in because he's a 4th round pick, a good QB in the later rounds that will provide insurance if Clemens is a bust, but won't wreck his confidence, and a big wide receiver in the later rounds. IS it the best draft ever? No, but it addresses an awful lot of issues and question marks and really they got the best guys available for the positions they were drafting in the spot they were in. So I'm happy and we'll wait and see how it works out on the field.
