D-Rob to Denver part II

On the surface, it appears the Jets got next to nothing in trading Dewayne Robertson to the Broncos Thursday afternoon for what has been reported to be a late-round conditional pick in the 2009 draft.

But, a league source said, if Robertson plays as much for the Broncos as he did for the Jets last season, the draft choice could "be significantly better than that."

That has a decent chance of happening. While Robertson has a bone-on-bone condition in his knee and he flunked a Broncos team physical last month, the defensive tackle, never a fit for the Jets 3-4 scheme, played in 15 of 16 games in 2007. In 2006, he played in all 16 games. If Robertson sees the field that much next season, the Jets will end up getting more out of this than it currently looks. Still, for the fourth overall pick of the 2003 draft...well, something's better than nothing.

Of course, the larger victory for the Jets here is the money they've cleared. Robertson was due about $18 million over the final two years of his contract.

Perfect timing. Now let's hope we carry this good momentum into the draft.

Not to late to dump D'Brickasha Ferguson for a first day pick. Another year of 'he's improving' would devalue him to a second day pick like Robertson.

How do the Jets manage to take two fourth overall picks in the draft and come up with two marginal at best players.

Looks like Darren MCFadden, if the Jets get him, will be another Blair Thomas.

Anything less than 10-6 and a playoff berth this year equates to cleaning house and bringning in real proffesionals with a proven track record after this season.

Raj,

don;t be hatin' on D"brick. he can play, and will rebound with better linemates & mentors.

agree about McOverrated. Jets need DL help depsite Jenkins, & CB, LB & WR. No CB in this draft worth the 6th pick

wouldn't mind seeing Henne or even Brohm at QB, but i've seen Ryan multiple times in college & he's also waay overrated

Mikey, I agree about Ryan, he played in a woeful ACC. One of the weakest conferences in the country the last few years. As for McFadden, if you look at what he did in the SEC you have to be impressed. He ran over an incredible LSU defense. I remember analysts last year saying Petersen would be a bust so I'm not buying into the hype that McFadden will be also. Anybody that runs a sub-4 would be a great compliment to Jones and the newly improved O-Line with FB Richardson.

Correct me if you guys disagree, but haven't the Jets set themselves up to be a power running team? Jones is going to need a partner and it's not going to be Leon every other down.

Ryan might be *slightly* overrated for lack of other top-tier quarterbacks, but he brings a lot to the table. His technique is excellent. The Jets won't have to start from scratch. It's up to the team if they want to pursue that course, but I won't be bummed if they select him.

McFadden is enticing but the knocks on him are similar to the knocks on Reggie Bush. If he's a rich man's Leon Washington, the team will still need a work horse. (They don't come cheap, ya know)

Cimini says the conditional pick could be as high as a 2nd rounder if Robertson meets playing time incentives. Great trade!

Now I want Chad traded and Matty Ice a Jet!

Jeff,

Crack kills. Jets could potentially nab C. Long with the 6th pick. I'll give you the trade Penny idea, but for the right price and pick up Flacco or Henne if available in the 2nd.

Guys. Clemens isn't as bad as you're all making him out to be. He came in late last year to an offense that was made for a guy who couldn't throw deep and stretch the field. He came in for a losing team that didn't have much of a shot and he came in behind a horrid OL. Now, jump off his back and give him the same chance that we gave Penny back before he had his injuries.

Also, the 2nd round could be just as good of a CB as we might get from a late 1st round pick...keep that in mind.

Cliff I agree 100%. We have no idea yet what we have in Clemens due to the fact that the offense around him was dreadful. That said, I don't believe Chad got a fair look either, and in a head to head competition, I think Chad will win the job. That probably bodes well for the Jets anyway given the investments they've made in the offense which clearly indicates a desire to win now.

Gentlemen,

I never really understood why us Jets fans hated Dwayne Robertson. The guy was a big heavy DT that was incredibly inexperienced. Being the patient fans we are; A. Never let him come into his own. B. Changed our defense just about every season he was here. He was doomed to fail in our minds. The expecations were astronomical. It will be sad watching him dominate with the Broncos the way he should have with us. At least we got something out of him.

I don't know about the rest of you, but this "tight lipped" front office makes me go crazy wondering WHO is the guy they want? I can't believe I am trusting in the Jets front office with confidence to make a phenomenal 1st round move (Dbrick/Mangold/Revis) So far so good.

How many defenders in the front 7 need to be taken in the first round to realize that this organization is clueless picking these players? Case in point, from 2000-2004, the Jets had 8 first round picks. Five were front 7 guys. Guess how many are still with the team? Two of them, Bryan Thomas and Shaun Ellis. Granted, John Abraham couldn't stay on the field and Vilma and Robertson in a 3-4 were so out of place in that system that it was laughable. Thomas had one fluke year in the walk year of a contract and Ellis has been nice, but is not a stud.

My point is that since 2000, the defensive schemes switch so much that these guys have a tough time adapting to new systems. Put a great RB behind a good line and you get a guy who can be a great player for 7-9 years. the system does not matter.

pair up RUN DMC with Thomas Jones and you have a lethal combo in your backfield with Leon Washington as your 3rd down David Meggett 'scatback' with Richardson blocking behind a revamped OL and you've got something nice.

Plus, when was the last time the Jets had a player who could give the organization any juice at all? Not since Keyshawn.

Cornerback is this team's most pressing need. Can you imagine if Revis misses a couple games next year? The Jets starters would be David Barrett and Justin Miller. Think about that.

If they're unable to trade down, I wouldn't mind if they "reached" for Leodis McKelvin. Yeah, sure, the Radio City boo-birds will have a field day, but I'll cheer the pick.

If the "experts" are accurate, then it's only a one-spot reach but it satisfies a HUGE need.

I hate 'need' or 'reach' picks. Every position on this team has a weak link. If McFadden is on the board, he's the best available guy and must be taken. Period. If they decide to entice Baltimore or Carolina in a game of chicken for Matt Ryan to stockpile more picks, fine. The reason this defense has been so anemic is because they cannot get to the QB. They can't rush the passer. With the way the rules are today, I think using a sixth pick on a CB is way too high. if that is their direction, trade down.

TRADE DOWN! Even if it just a couple spots to No. 8 because McFuddle and cRyan are the wrong players for us. There are good backs and QBs further down...
