Jets vs. Hempstead

By Tom Rock

Laveranues Coles received a lesson in Jets history.

The receiver was talking about how the opponent does not matter when preparing for a game. “Whether it’s Miami or we’re playing Hempstead High, you want to win the game.”

Asked how the Jets would fare against the Tigers, Coles went on: “That would be a good game for us. It would be good for the guys. It might get our morale going if we get one of those on the schedule.”

Then came the history. We asked Coles if Hempstead could get Rob Moore, a former Jet receiver who played at Hempstead. Who?

“Rob Moore, a former receiver here,” chimed in tight end Chris Baker, who has the locker adjacent to Coles and who grew up in Queens as a Jets fan. “Man, you don’t know Jets history.”

Coles shrugged it off.

“Yeah, they can get Rob,” he said. “I think we’d handle them pretty well.”

Just a quick correction. Turns out the hoods on the parking signs in front of the Jets complex, the ones reserving prime spots for players of the week, were not there as a statement or a punishment. Erin O’Brien, who is Mangini’s assistant, said it was just because the lot is filled with trailers and they needed all the spots they could get. But when they left the signs showing, nobody parked there, so they covered them up.

Too bad. That would have been a nice touch.

Rob Moore. What a waste of talent. When you look at the Jet teams of the early and mid 90's, you see so much wasted talent. Rob Moore? Johnny Mitchell? Marvin Jones? Blair Thomas? It's pathetic.

Just noticed Jimmy's comment from O.13th, wasted talent? Blair Thomas may have underachieved but to call Rob Moore, Johnny Mitchell and Marvin Jones especially wasted talents is CRAZY. They were achieving in the top league in the world in their profession. They were the top 0.5% in the world at what they did. Are you a wasted talent Jimmy? Or are you in the top percentiles of anything? I can tell by your comment, you're obese aren't you?

nyjets.com has an excellent article on Johnny Mitchell, perhaps Jimmy should read it. If that doesn't convince him, I could always mail vhs tapes of the games thoses guys played.....It's tough being a Jets fan. I've been one for 34yrs, I used to go to the Training camp at Hofstra when it was empty save for 25-40 people, Gastineau and Klecko have signed autographs for me as a child and added, hey I remember you guys, you're the kids from Canada. And while this was true, it wasn't all true. I was a kid from Brokklyn who's parents moved to Canada. I've still got my passport and I'm still a Jets fan. My colors don't run.
