How the Giants' success can help keep Spags

It's an obstacle that assistant coaches face every year. They can interview but cannot be offered any head coaching jobs while their current team is in the playoffs. That means suitors have to wait, and in the case of Spagnuolo and the Giants, if they reach the Super Bowl, they'd have to wait a month.

That's a long time for a franchise to be without a head coach.

Since Spags is in such high demand -- he's apparently meeting with officials from the Browns and the Lions today and the Jets on Saturday -- it seems unlikely that teams will be willing to hold out that long. Especially not when there are at least three teams in hot pursuit and only one Spags. If the Giants win the NFC title on Jan. 18 and two of the teams interested in Spags have not made a hire, expect at least one of them to blink and hire someone who is available. They all might.

So if the Giants want to keep Spagnuolo as their defensive coordinator, the best way to do that would be to continue winning.

An early exit from the playoffs would almost certainly mean the loss of Spagnuolo as well.

Why can't they just get a deal in place to make him the next head coach?
