Chad Pennington may not have to change his address after all.

The former Jets quarterback who became expendable once the team acquired Brett Favre has hit the market hot as teams around the league go in search of a starter (or at least a starting-caliber backup). One of those teams sniffing around Pennington is the Giants.

“We take a look at everybody,” general manager Jerry Reese said coyly after last night’s preseason loss to the Lions. “That includes him.”

Reese wouldn’t elaborate on how much interest the Giants would have in Pennington. Nor would he say if he had been in contact with Pennington. The Giants clearly felt that they needed to upgrade behind Eli Manning when they selected Andre Woodson in the draft and signed former No. 1 overall pick David Carr during the offseason. Carr has had a shaky training camp but performed well in tonight’s 13-10 loss.

The Giants’ interest was first reported last night by the New York Times. There have reportedly been at least six teams that have reached out to Pennington, the most accurate passer in NFL history.

“I’ve known Chad for a long time and he’s been a good pal of mine,” Manning said. “I know he’ll bounce back on his feet and wherever he goes he’ll have a good shot at playing and playing well.”
