Back to the draw-ing board
If there was one thing the offense was working on today, it was the draw play. Lots of them in drills and a few sprinkled into the 11-on-11s. There were also a lot more 11-on-11 snaps in the entire afternoon practice, which you can click below to read about, but for now here are just a few observations:
The usuals were out. Burress did not practice and is scheduled to see the team doctor either tonight or tomorrow. He did have a soft toss with PUPpy David Carr at one point. Danny Clark and Osi Umenyiora, two guys on one-a-day programs, sat out. Zak DeOssie and Sam Madison, the other one-a-dayers, were in. And Nate Robinson of the hamstring injury was sidelined once again. That was the last time, though. The Giants waived have waived him. That's a casualty of the 80-man roster in camp. If a young guy gets hurt early and didn't have a great chance of making the team to begin with, they'll cut him and bring in someone else who can at least take reps. The Jets did the same thing with Danny Woodhead today.
One of the most exciting plays of the practice was the almost catch, almost interception, catch by Michael Jennings on a crossing route in 11s. Wright threw the pass a touch behind and McQuarters was there to knock it away. Then it looked like Jennings would grab it, but he juggled it. Then it looked like McQuarters would grab it, but HE juggled it. Finally, Jennings made the catch, securing the ball and falling to the turf. That play is marked by a * below.
Woodson continues to struggle, but he's a rookie QB and I can't think of anything that could be less confusing that that. OK, maybe rookie astronaut. But that's about it. So his lack of execution is excusable. Still, he threw some bad passes again this afternoon, including one that was picked off by Nehemiah Warrick and another that wobbled and led Marrion Manningham out of bounds. He also fumbled a handoff exchange with Kay-Jay Harris on a draw and had to have Kevin Gilbride scrap one of his plays and call the team back to the huddle because no one was sure what they were doing. Tough day for the kid, but I think he'll get better. There are glimpses.
Tough day for Manning, too, and he's no rookie. He started out with back-to-back interceptions, including a nice juggling pick by Corey Webster who had a rough go of it in th emorning session. He also slipped and fell after handing the ball off to Jacobs on a draw and didn't seem to be in sync with Toomer as much as he had been -- they were miscommunicating routes and one pass to Toomer was very low. But he made up for it at the end when, with his last pass of the day, he gave a crisp play-action fake to halt a blitz for just a half-frame and then found Kevin Boss in the end zone. Boss made a good catch for the TD with Kiwanuka draped all over him.
The team's best QB option may be PR guy Avis Roper, who hurled a loose ball 45 yards in the air -- without warming up. Nice arm, Avis!
A few new games to play today. Tynes came out for his first field goal attempts of the summer. He was 8-for-8, including two from 37 yards out. The team also ran an exciting drill in which TEs and RBs went one-on-one against LBs and Ss. Usually the receivers won -- there's no help and the contact is a little limited -- but Kenny Phillips did well to knock down a pass for Darcy Johnson and Michael Johnson hung tight on Kevin Boss despite a slick double move. Later, though, Johnson had it handed to him by Danny Ware on a quick cut at the release.
