OK, here's what everyone's saying:
-- Giants say Eli has a bruised A-C joint in a statement; TC says Eli has a sprained shoulder, which means it's separated. So ESPN is somewhat right. But he's day to day, and neither Eli nor TC is ruling the QB out for Sunday. Hey, Eli shook Blauber's hand. "Vigorously," Blaubs reported. He's cured!
Seriously -- it's not as minor as Eli made it out to be, but it's not necessarily an automatic month either.
-- Osi has an irritation of the lateral meniscus in his left knee and the Giants say he's day to day. A person close to the situation said Umenyiora will miss a month. Who's right? Who knows? Osi wasn't around today and TC isn't ruling anything out there either... Not even moving Mathias Kiwanuka back to DE if Umenyiora's injury is serious.
-- The only sure thing is Jacobs' sprained MCL. Three-to-five weeks for him.
-- Oh, and Barry Cofield hyperextended his knee. But he's fine. Swear.
And, lastly, Terrell Owens did give Gibril Wilson the finger after T.O.'s second TD... Which prompted Wilson to shove Owens and draw a personal foul. "I think it goes back to last year. We don't exactly get along," Wilson said. Maybe he doesn't get fined for retaliating.

This is ridiculous. Do these people understand what this nonsense does to the fans. You can't hold diehard fans lives hostage while we wait for the real information to come out. Either the Giants season is over or it isn't based on this injury. And have you ever seen a teams 3 most important players get seriously hurt in the first game of the season. If eli misses A game the season is over.
Arthur,
Do you know if the Giants' strength and conditioning program is different than the league norm? It seems like every year we get decimated by injuries, and last night the team looked tired and out of shape.
ACTUALLY, the best thing Coughlin could do is bench Eli for Sunday vs. the Packers. We can afford to miss Eli for 1 game(especially this one) so Eli can rest that shoulder and be in the condition he was in last night for many more games this year! Remember Chad Pennington 2 yrs ago? At least we are not going through that now. If Eli pushes it, his season is over.
Question for everyone:
Remember all of the news about the "kinder, gentler, nicer Tom Couglin" this training camp? All of the news about how he worked the guys in pads less often with less hitting, less drills, etc.?
Well last night I think that showed. The team looked lethargic and slow all night long. Madden and Michaels commented on how winded they looked repeatedly (especially Shockey).
This is pure conjecture here - but perhaps Coughlin's "kinder, more gentle" approach backfired last night??
Cody,
I honestly don't believe that's the case. TC's held relatively tame camps his entire career. The knock on TC hasn't been tough practices, it's been tough accountability to seemingly innocuous transgressions.
It was extremely humid in Dallas last night, and that's what took its toll. Well, that and no one covering Jason Witten (I just saw him open in the middle of my living room again) as well as not executing basic tackling techniques.
Just my .02
What the heck does conditioning have to do with a knee injury and ankle sprains? Man get with it and understand the sport. You and any conditioning guy would make zillions if you could prevent this kind of injury.
It a tough and violent sport! And the knee and ankle are week joints.
Say why does your mast head have green? Not Giants colors, makes me think you no little about them as a writer.
Yo...teams like to keep their opposition in the dark about injuries...makes game planing more difficult. Hope the Giants decide to let the fans in on what's going on so they won't be left out in the dark..Yea right!
I don't think it was their conditioning that made them weak in the fourth quarter. It's the fact that Dallas' players were injecting cold fluid into their shoulder pads, and Spags didn't want that in his players' pads, so the 'Boys were cool on the field while the Jints were dehydrating.
If anyone actually watched the game, then this wouldn't have to be brought up.
When you're out of shape -- slow, tired, etc. -- you are susceptable to injury. The injuries last night by themselves, don't seem to apply, but this has been a systemic problem over the last few years. Seeing the Giants very slow and extremely tired last night, one has to wonder if our guys are more injury prone -- and they do seem to be -- because they're out of shape.
spoke with an orthopedic surgeon. he said even with a shoulder separation, Eli could play this week if he takes cortizone shot for the pain. Will not cause structural damage if Eli can make the throws. There is no way to determine length of time from a separated shoulder either. He pointed out that Drew Stanton separated his shoulder against Michigan a couple years ago, and continued to play the rest of the year and did not suffer any setbacks in his throwing arm the rest of the season or his career. so take all that for whats it worth. Get better Eli we need ya more than ever!
Arthur, where is Aaron Ross?Is he injured too?
Re:Aaron Ross:not that the Giants would like to prevent a pass this decade.
We have no chance to win with the Hefty Lefty - If Manning is out we should sign Leftwich
Signing a new QB is rather meaningless considering the time it work take to get acclimated with the offense and certainly some timing with receivers. Unfortunately the Giants are stuck with what they have and need to find a way to make that work if ELI misses any time and that is a very big IF.
i am not ready to throw in the towel on this season by any stretch of the imagination, but i can see this team finishing 6-10, 7-9 very easily. with that being said arthur, when the g-men go looking for a new coach, do you think they go proven like TC or unproven like fassel was? do you think the higher-ups took notice of what mike singletary's defense looked like last night? and how freakin' good was patrick willis, the rookie mlb out of ole miss???
Jerry Reese,
What did you do to improve this team from last season? Absolutely Nothing!!! Every single issue from last year is back X's two.
When you draft a corner with the 20th pick he should be STARTING with this horrible secondary. Would Aaron Ross really do worse than RW Mcquarters, Sam Madison, and Corey Webster??? Are you kidding me?
I second Andrew's point. How bad does A. Ross have to be, that he cannot contribute to a defense that forced one punt? This leadership group seems to do a very poor job in evaluating defensive backfield talent, both in the draft and in free agency - and we are paying for it now.
Also, wasn't Ross supposed to be a great kick/punt returner? Is there a reason he is not out there?
I am not ready to throw in the towel, but TC has not shown me that he has the ability to outcoach teams, with or without the horses healthly.
Andrew – Are you trolling for trouble? You sound like a Jets fan trying to stir up controversy on a Giants’ blog.
GM Jerry Reese did nothing? As you pointed out he drafted a cornerback. It’s up to Coughlin and Spags to make the call on if and when he plays.
Speaking of the defense – Reese brought in a new – and potentially great - defensive coordinator -stealing him away from division rival Philadelphia. Getting rid of Tim Lewis is the move I was looking for almost two years now.
On another move – Reese fired Hufnagel - I’m not sure I liked that one – but we DO have a new offensive coordinator this year. More important than that – we have a new QB’s coach – I’d be willing to go out on a limb and say – Eli has made a quantum leap in his accuracy and overall game play based on the pre-season and Sunday night.
So I don’t see how you can point any fingers at Reese.
The defense will come around. These things take time. Any football fan can tell you that. A new coordinator with new all new schemes takes time to develop. Check back in around week 5 and see how we’re doing. I tell you one thing – Dallas won’t be putting up big numbers on November 11th.
Brandon – If Eli misses one game it is NOT over. I wouldn’t mind if he needed a week of rest if it means we get him back in week three and he can play like he did in Dallas. The pessimist in me says the defense is likely to give away another game anyway. And if that’s going to happen, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Lorenzen play a game. However, the optimist in me says our defense might be able to stop the Packers – and Lorenzen just might have enough in him to pull off an upset. I think Lorenzen is a lot better than everyone seems to give him credit. He’s smart, he’s big, and he’s got a good arm. Give him a stripped down playbook and let him take some shots down field. Don’t forget, even without Jacobs – this team can run.
All in all – we are fortunate by the relatively good news regarding the injuries. If all of these guys are back in the time frames given, we’ll have a good run in the second half of the season and could easily finish 10-6.
Go Big Blue!
-Big BB
Big BB - you make some great points but i will back Andrew on one of his points - "When you draft a corner with the 20th pick he should be STARTING with this horrible secondary. Would Aaron Ross really do worse than RW Mcquarters, Sam Madison, and Corey Webster?"
Just look at what Patrick Willis did as the MLB for the 49ers last night - that is what I want out of a first-round pick - IMPACT from the get-go.
I have to agree with the Aaron Ross thing also. He should be starting; he must be starting.
But I also agree with the fact that this defense will come around within the next couple of weeks, and I'm betting it'll be this week.
Should Eli be out against Green Bay, the defense knows it will have to take it up another level, and I believe it will.
I like the idea of Kiwanuka playing at RDE and Wilkinson plugged in at LB. I think we'll see more pass-rushing on Sunday afternoon.
You absolutely must criticially view Reese's performance thus far. Take Sunday night's game: most disturbing was the lack of talented personnel on the defensive side of the ball.
So let's review some of the GM’s decisions thus far on the job:
- Sitting out free agency: I know that many guys had big price tags, but I think we all agree that this "D" needed a playmaker or two
- The untimely jettison of Demps: I know he was hurt; but I doubt he would have played as poorly as James Butler did
- Not going after a quality LB: not to pile it on Kiwanuke, but he was way out of position and Kawika Mitchell looked overwhelmed.
All of those moves seem especially questionable right now, don't they?
So thus far this year the Giants have questionable LB’s, a poor pass rush, and a defensive backfield that always seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. That sounds an awful lot like the last two years.
I really hate to pile it on guys that were starting their first game or playing a new position - but (a) I don’t think the coaching staff did them any favors, and (b) the personnel and the schemes that the D played last night looked abominable.
So yeah, I think you also have to point the finger at Reese for failing to get playmakers on D.
