« More Eli! | Main | Strahan heading back to the east coast »

Second-to-last practice

First, a quick injury rundown, since there are some additions:

WR Amani Toomer twisted his ankle this morning and sat out the evening practice. No word on his status yet, but he looked unhappy leaving the field.

QB Jared Lorenzen (concussion) and RB Derrick Ward (ankle), who were both hurt in Sunday's game but practiced yesterday, sat tonight.

P Jeff Feagles' back tightened up and he wasn't out there tonight either.

Jeremy Shockey (hamstring) dressed and did some individual work but no team drills.

As for those team drills, a couple brief highlights:

Eli Manning delivered a perfect, 45-yard strike to Steve Smith in 7-on-7s... TC gave it to TE Michael Matthews for missing blocks on consecutive Reuben Droughns runs, then Matthews dropped an easy catch. Oops... Kevin Boss made a couple more nice catches... Plaxico Burress had two good grabs and looked sharp... Josh Huston and Lawrence Tynes each hit from 35 and 40 yards.

One workout left up here in Albany, and it won't be a serious one tomorrow.

Next guy to go needs to be Shockey. Every year he claims that he cannot work out with team because his Miami crew is so much better at getting him prepared and every YEAR he comes up with some lame injury so he can have an excuse for poor production. He has missed the last game of the season for what 3 years now, and now he can't get through training camp. By what game this season will he have the nagging season long injury to bitch about. He has become the classic over hyped player. The Giants should trade him while there is some perceived value and see what the returns are. ANother season of underproduction and bitching from Shockey!

I understand the frustration about Shockey, but keep a couple things in mind. First, he is actually faster and stronger now than when he first entered the league. He has recently been timed at 4.4 in the 40, and his clock time when he was drafted was 4.55. As for the injuries, yes, he gets banged up, but the guy takes a hell of a lot of punishment on the field. He sometimes tries to do too much in terms of yards after the catch (trying to be a poor man's Mark Bavaro), and players like that do not stay uninjured for long. I also think he is head-hunted by opposing players because he shoots his mouth off too much. But without him on the field, Eli is half the QB he is otherwise. He is a crucial outlet guy, and very much a part of the offensive game plan. Who do you replace him with?

Anyway, watch what happens to Brandon Jacobs this year in terms of the injury front. Like Shockey, he takes to many hits and as big as he is, he will not last the season unless he learns to fall down a few times instead of allowing the defense free shots at him.
