Feely Not Returning

A person with knowledge of the talks between the Giants and K Jay Feely told me earlier today that the team decided not to increase its contract offer significantly over its offer from before free agency began, so Feely is headed elsewhere. The Dolphins, Chiefs and Falcons are still in the running for Feely's services.

According to the person, the Giants chose not to spend their money on a kicker -- they will likely head into the season with undrafted rookie free agent Josh Huston and a veteran signed later in the spring for less money than they wanted to pay Feely, who made 84 percent of his field-goal attempts in his two seasons with the Giants.

Wise Mara move: Save the cap room for the late December cuts.

THE GIANTS ARE ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL IN THE FREE AGENCY PARADE.LOSING PETTIGOUT AND FEELY ONLY BOLSTERS OTHER TEAMS AND THE GIANTS HAVE A SIGNIFICANTLY WEAKER TEAM.
LAST YEAR WAS SO CLOSE..
NEXT YEAR WILL BE HOW FAR

I understand cutting Emmons, Arrington and Pettigout. They were just older vets who could never make it through 16 games. Most of the free agents out there are getting totally overpaid and I don't mind teh Giants not blowing the bank on average players.

However, I really think Feely should have been resigned. Isn't there a comfort in knowing that your kicking situation is taken care of????? I just hope that we don't turn into one of those teams that needs to pick up kickers on a weekly basis...

What a joke Reese has turned out as the Giants New GM. All I see is good players leaving and no good players coming in. A 8-8 season, this op and coming season, will be a god sent with the lack of movement by the new GM. I thought the hole process is to get better or has the Reese decided the Giants need rebuilding with a younger core which will mean more lossing and the lose for more solid veterans. As a long time and loyal Giany fan, I am extremely disppointed is many of the new GM moves or lack their of.

WE ARE SCREWED FOR NEXT SEASON.

The Giants are one cheap joke. Losing out on McGahee for what he was dealt for is sorry. I am ashamed to be a Giant fan right now. We have no kicker until someone gets released, no extra offensive lineman, no linebacker and no cornerback. Reese is all talk and no action.

Question for the forum:
What does Mr. Reese have in common with Emperor Nero?

They both sat idly by while his respective "Empire" was purged.

I agree with Bob (posted @ 1:01 pm). Those three players (along with Tiki's attitute) had to be purged.

However, if Mr. Reese is passively euthanizing the G-Men, then why bring back Coughlin, Strahan and Toomer? They are also past their primes and injury-prone (Coughlin is, of course, stuck in the 1980s and 90s). Cutting those players, for instance, will get you a better slot in next April's draft.

I understand avoiding ridiculous contracts--see the Niners' new CB and Cowboys' new OL. It is painfully clear that some action is needed. I hope you know what you're doing, Emperor Nero...err...Jerry Reese.

Hey Jeremy, GREAT POST!!! I've spent the last week or so hoping and praying we would land McGahee before some other sorry ass team got him. I get home from work today and turn on PTI and find out McGahee is off to Baltimore. Especially since the only move the Giants made was signing O'Hara. Ohh, by the way... WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO DOMONIC RHODES??? Do we still have a shot at him or not???

Everyday I come home from work and hope to see that the Giants have signed someone, anyone!!!! It didnt have to be Clements or A Thomas or Porter but a nice middle of the pack player with upside (Rod Hood or a linebacker) would be nice. We have lost 4 key guys when healthy and replaced them with nothing! There is still time for Jerry to redeem himself here but he better not wait to long or we are going to end up with a Marshall Faulk comeback....ouch

I wonder where Jerry Reese will rank during the next rating of general managers in sports?

I have a question, who here wanted Reese as our GM? I for one didn't. This was typical Giants by hiring within the organization! Is Scott Pioli still available?

Steve, the Giants offered Pioli a job before keeping it in-house. He rejected his "dream job," as the DailyNews described it, to stay with the Patriots.

Reese was the best available, I think. Besides, at least he's not Isiah Thomas.

Are the Maras planning to RAISE ticket prices this year? Or LOWER them due to the much cheaper team they are going to put on the playing field this season? How many more Giants well paid players will the Maras release June 1st or before? How many of these will be traded prior to the draft for picks who can be paid minimum salaries if they even make the team.

Mike,
Pioli was offered the job when the pats were still in the playoffs. And even at that time, rumors were swirling that Parcells was asked to be our GM. So more than likely he rejected it because of one of those factors. If the Giants had waited until after the playoffs, which they didn't, and asked him again, he may have agreed.
