After hearing plenty about the Giants and Patriots' VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli having mutual interest in making Pioli the Giants' GM, a Giants official just told me that the Giants asked the Pats for permission to talk, permission was granted...
And Pioli declined to be interviewed.
Word is that even Bill Belichick placed a call to the Giants to tell them how good Pioli is. This is a bit of a shocker, I think, but the guy has a good job with a good team and might not want to be the one to overhaul the Giants.
Just speculating on that. But it's not speculation that Pioli said no to an interview.

nice job, Scoop! keep keeping us posted!!!!
horrible, horrible news. Do you hear anything about Bellichick as a possibility (in any capacity)?
Declined to be interviewed by the PRESS or the GM Position?
Why would he turn us down for even a token interview? His "dream job"? Is Parcells behind this? Will we now lose out on Pioli AND Reese?
Arthur: just out of curiosity, why would Belicheck call the Giants and recommend his right hand man to them? Doesn't that seem out of character for him? Wouldn't the Giants know how good he is already/
Is there any possibility that his decline was temporary, and Pioli might be willing to talk to the Giants after the Patriots' season is over?
More distressing than this horrible season of mistakes, overestimation of talent and dismal play would be a Giants offseason filled with small fixes here and there.
The leading rumor is that Jerry Reese, director of player personnel, is the leading candidate for GM. How can you be the architect for assembling this no name, no talent defense (particularly an overhauled, completely overmatched, secondary) and end up with a promotion??
It's time for a bold new leadership team, I hope the Giants brass has the vision and courage to clean house entirely and start again.
Smart decision Pioli...why get wrapped up in a Giant mess.
"It's time for a bold new leadership team, I hope the Giants brass has the vision and courage to clean house entirely and start again."
I'll believe it when I see it. Firing Coughlin would be a start...
Jerry Reese, director of player personnel, should not be the leading candidate for GM of the Giants. There are too many well assembled Teams (San Diego, Baltimore, and Pittsburg, who have done a better job assembling talent and the right coaching staff to place a team in the right direction.
The Mara's and Tisches need to search harder and hire a young visionary and get the broom out to sweep the stench of losing out the Giant's house.
The reason that the head coach needs to go is that, except for correcting Tiki Barber's fumbling problems, he didn't make anyone better. It's a shame that for a former receivers coach, the Giants were so undisciplined and ran such bad routes, it makes you wonder what he was watching. How come the receivers never came back for balls, instead wait for the ball to come to them thus letting the defenders have a good crack at the ball. How come they run 8 and 9 yard routes when 10 yards is needed. Didn't they ever hear of running 12 and 13 yard routes and coming back for the ball so they would guarantee the catch was over the first down stripe. Some teams have playmakers on the receiving corps. Guys who catch and run with the ball and thus can take a short pass and do something with it. Not the Giants and that problem needs to be addressed. In addition, it appears that Shockey is only good for 5 and 6 yard routes for that is all they throw him. What ever happened to seam passes, putting Shockey on a linebacker for such distances that the linebackers have problems covering. It would open up the running backs for flair passes or the other receivers for passes over the middle. Why didn't the Giants try both Barber and Jacobs in the backfield at the same time. Then the defense couldn't key on just one running back and try both proved that they could catch the ball out the the backfield. When you don't have playmakers on the receiving corps you better find enough playmakers elsewhere to make the defense be on the defensive. It's time for the Giants to find someone who is imaginative and can get all the units, offensive, defense and special teams to play. Too many games were lost because two of the three units needed a ticket to enter the stadium.
If Coach Coughlin knows that he will be around next year, he should'nt wait around for the new GM. He should start by hiring a offensive coordinator to work with Eli, namely Jim Fassel. Fassel if he would agree to return would do wonders for Eli. He would also ressurect his career after being UNFAIRLY singled out and let go in Baltimore. Any football guy knows Billick wanted to run his offense! Then I would bring in Dom Capers to run the defense. He has worked with Coughlin before and done a good job. With these two former head coaches aboard Big Blue just might have that big season that they've talked about.
Seems to me that keeping Tom Coughlin because there are no better alternatives (which seems to be the direction things are heading)is foolish. Why not promote Tim Lewis? Up until this year he was considering one of the top coaching prospects-a bright young defensive mind. This year, he lost his 2 Pro Bowl Ends for much of the year, along with a starting linebacker and 2 starting DBs for multiple games. He didn't simply lose the ability to coach overnight, did he? Also, the players always seem to genuinely praise him
Reese or Mara it seems like and the Giants are to fearful of giving one of their own the job. So will Reese get it by means of elimination?
