A commenter offered this advice, and I think it's worked. I'm sorry I don't know who it is, but I'm sure whoever it is will resurface and take full credit for the potential solution to all that ails us here in comment land.
Anyway, here's the hoped-for solution.
After you type in the comment and then the security code, hold down the "control" button and then hit "post."
It's worked for me the last four times.
