Power rankings: Giants still No. 1, Eagles fading fast

(Ranking, team, record, last week's ranking)

1. Giants (4-0) (1): That 44-6 win over Seattle might have been their most dominating performance since the 2000 NFC Championship Game. elimanning.jpg

2. Titans (5-0) (2): You knew it was going to be ugly against the Ravens’ brilliant defense. But in the end, Kerry Collins got it done to keep the Titans unbeaten and keep Vince Young on the bench for the foreseeable future.

3. Redskins (4-1) (3): No more waiting for the Redskins to come back down to earth. They’re legitimately good.

4. Cowboys (4-1) (4): Now the Cowboys know how the Giants felt when the Bengals took them to OT a couple weeks ago. Dallas nearly blew it against the winless Bengals.

5. Steelers (4-1) (6): Hats off to Big Ben for a fine performance under difficult circumstances on the road in J’ville.

6. Panthers (4-1) (8): Carolina fattens up the record with a blowout win over hapless Kansas City.

7. Broncos (4-1) (10): Finally, the defense does something worthwhile. Broncos win a nailbiter over Bucs.

8. Bills (4-1) (5): Our beloved NKR took delight in seeing the Bills go down in Arizona. J.P. Losman did nothing once Trent Edwards went down with a concussion.

9. Bears (3-2) (12): Bears clobber Lions in Detroit, as Kyle Orton has his way against a pitiful defense.

10. Buccaneers (3-2) (9): Brian Griese or Jeff Garcia? It all depends on how quickly Griese heals up from elbow and shoulder problems he suffered against Denver.

11. Patriots (3-1) (17): Pats come off bye week and put up 30 against 49ers, taking some of the sting out of their Week 3 loss at home to Miami.

12. Eagles (2-3) (7): With Brian Westbrook, the Eagles are a playoff team. Without him, they’re not.

13. Jaguars (2-3) (13): Jags’ secondary exposed in home loss to Steelers.

14. Colts (2-2) (14): The Colts can thank Sage Rosenfels for that one. Three turnovers in the final minutes of the fourth quarter allows Indy to come back from 17-point deficit.

15. Chargers (2-3) (11): Chargers’ early-season woes continue, just like last year.

16. Ravens (2-2) (15): Ravens’ defense can’t finish off the Titans down the stretch.

17. Jets (2-2) (19): Jets come off bye to host Cincy on Sunday. If Cincy plays them as tough as they did the Cowboys and Giants, Jets in for a fight.

18. Vikings (2-3) (20): A season-saving win in New Orleans? Maybe.

19. Cardinals (3-2) (22): Kurt Warner was thinking about retirement after watching Anquan Boldin get hurt last week against the Jets. But after lighting up Bills on Sunday, he’s ready to keep on keeping on.

20. Saints (2-3) (18):
Reggie Bush stars, but Saints’ defense is proving to be a killer.

21. Falcons (3-2) (26): Matt Ryan really was the right choice for this team. The Falcons are one of the early-season surprises.

22. Packers (2-3) (16): Aaron Rodgers makes it back from a shoulder problem, but it’s the defense that stinks it up at home against Atlanta.

23. Dolphins (2-2) (24): Wing-T offense suits Dolphins just fine. Chadwick & Co. get the better of Chilkoot’s Chargers at home.

24. 49ers (2-3) (21): Hey, at least they’re a factor in the NFC West now that Seattle is scuffling.

25. Seahawks (1-3) (23): More misery for ‘Hawks: WR Deion Branch out with heel injury.

26. Browns (1-3) (25): Browns draw Giants at home on Monday night after bye week. Good luck, fellas.

27. Raiders (1-3) (29): Newly named interim coach Tom Cable (dang, I wish his first name was Larry so we could do the Larry The Cable Guy riff) brings his Raiders to New Orleans.

28. Chiefs (1-4) (27): Back to Brodie Croyle … as if that’ll make any difference.

29. Bengals (0-5) (30): At least the Bengals had the Cowboys sweating at the end.

30. Texans (0-4) (28): Sage Rosenfels is a one-man Football Follies show as Houston blows 17-point fourth-quarter lead.

31. Lions (0-4) (31): The only highlight of the season came on a Wednesday. Sept. 24, to be exact. That’s the day Matt Millen was fired. On the field, it’s one more miserable performance after another.

32. Rams (0-4) (32): Welcome back to the head coaching ranks, Jim Haslett. Your first assignment: at Redskins. Good luck.

Repeat is looking a bit more possible.

Winning is one thing, now showing signs of being able to dominate. Liking it.

Somebody needs to teach Eli how to properly knot a tie.

Come on Bob, you honestly believe the Bears and the Bucs are better than the Pats?

The gap between the Giants and everyone else is huge. I can't give a hearty endorsement to any other team in football right now. If the Giants played the Titans this week, the Giants would probably beat them by 20 or more. I also think that Washington is #2 not Tennessee, they would win a close game. The rest of them you could just throw their names in a hat and pick them out and place them anywhere, it really doesn't matter from #4 to about #20 right now.

I agree with Joe. The pats are ranked way too low. I also can't believe that the Titans are no. 2. Yes, the team is undefeated, but that's really not a true indicator because of the super soft schedule.

Joe, Lance:

Did you not see the Patriots get blown out at home two weeks ago by the Dolphins?

10/26 - the football world rights itself

Let's see: Skins in Zorn's first game. Check.
Rams anywhere? Check.
Bungals in OT? Check.
Seahawks on the East Coast? Check

Has any defending champ ever had an easier start? It's ridiculous to say the Giants are head and shoulders above the rest of the league. Sure, they've got to be #1 right now. But once they play a halfway decent team (Redskins in week 1 don't count - they would now), let's see if they "dominate" before we annoint them the best by far a huge margin.

Oops, "Anonymous" is BBiB!
