Man, you think pro athletes talk trash?
Get a load of this back-and-forth in the world of Chicago sportswriting - or should we say sports-sniping - between Jay Mariotti, formerly of the Chicago Sun-Times, and Mike Downey, currently of the Chicago Tribune.
Said Mariotti of his former teammate at the Sun-Times: "I could spot Rick Telander 890 words of Rick Reilly, and he still wouldn't write a relevant 900-word column. He's a bitter old man stuck in 1973."
Said Downey of the possibility of Mariotti joining the Tribune: "Only six groups would be offended by Jay being hired. The Cubs. The White Sox. The Bears. The Bulls. The Tribune staff. And our readers. Everybody else is going to say, 'What a great hire!"
What in the name of Edward R. Murrow has happened to our business?!?!
Hey, Best, don't worry. If we ever work for competing journalistic entities, I'll always say nice things about you ... even though you're stuck in 1973, too.

I'd think Best would be more ticked that I said he was still stuck in '73 than stealing material from his beat. Besides, he posted Chad Johnson's transcript from our conference call with him earlier today. I was on the call. Best was in his basement.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. They've just decided to back off for now because of a non-compete clause. I believe that clause expires in 11 months.
