I realize these polls are unscientific, but they are interesting nonetheless. You know, the flash polls that ask you the simple question like: Which quarterback do you want to play for the Jets:
Chad Pennington.
Kellen Clemens.
Brett Favre.
Given Favre's star status, not to mention the overheated entreaties by some in the media, you might assume he'd be the runaway favorite as we await word on whether the Jets or Bucs will land the 38-year-old quarterback. If so, you'd assume incorrectly.
It's almost 4:30 p.m., and more than 4,000 people have weighed in on the question on Newsday.com's poll, and the results are as follows:
Pennington (1674 responses) 37.6%
Kellen Clemens (613 responses) 13.8%
Brett Favre (2160 responses) 48.6%
4447 total responses (Results not scientific)
Thus, a shade over 50 percent of Jets fans prefer either Pennington or Clemens over Favre.
My vote would not go to Favre either (Pennington is the choice here), simply because it is too late in the game for Favre to come in, learn Eric Mangini's system cold and be a viable quarterback for the entire season.
And don't forget the fact that he has sent out definitive signals that he was not interested in the Jets ... until his agent, Bus Cook, started spreading the word today that he is, in fact, interested in the Jets. All of which sounds like an agent trying to get a deal done by not limiting the Packers' options.

How about this question for the poll. Does anyone in New York even care about Favre?
Glauber most people down here don't want Favre on Tampa either, and for a good reason, unlike the Jets the Bucs don't stink and don't need a QB. Garcia is pissed beyond belief, he was angry before all this started because he wanted a new contract and now he's getting dumped on, plus he's not practicing because he is supposed to be hurt. Now there is also speculation down here that Chucky isn't the guy behind this move, but he is getting the grief for it because he is the one doing all the talking. Bruce Allan hasn't said anything at all and hasn't been seen in public at training camp, and all the speculation is that the Glazers told Allan to get Favre. The Glazers get blamed for everything that goes wrong with the Bucs I have learned since I have been down in Florida.
Sandy:
Great stuff. Much appreciated. Still think Chucky is in love with BF, although we shall see.
Looks like you were a little premature there, Bob. Now the poll says that 53% want Favre to start (vs. 34% for Pennington and 13% for Clemens).
Anybody with a brain knows the Jets are instantly a significantly better team with Favre at the helm rather than the alternatives (a second-year player and a guy who can't throw the ball more than 20 yards downfield).
You're also ridiculously overstating the difficulty of "learning" a new offense, especially for a seasoned and accomplished veteran like Favre. This is football, not rocket science. It's a game. Favre has played and thrived under different systems from high school to college at Southern Miss to his pro career with the Falcons and Packers.
Learning Brian Schottenheimer's offense is not akin to taking a crash course in quantum mechanics. If you can't recognize that, you really have no business covering football.
PS - I hope, in the interest of honesty, you retitle your post to "53% WANT Brett Favre as Starting QB" to reflect the actual results of the poll.
Gary, stop being a dick and let Bob do his job. Get a life. He doesn't come to your job and knock the broom out of your hand.
What poll is Glauber talking about???
Newsday's poll says 54% WANT Favre as the starter, and that was when he was merely a hypothetical. Many thought we didn't really have a chance to get him and voted for Chad or Clemens instead.
Glauber misrepresented the poll results in order to act as if a lot of people agreed with his harebrained claim that the Jets are better off with Chad.
