Classic overtime game in NHL playoffs; no one sees it

I read this morning where the Stars eliminated the Sharks in a four OT thriller.

Would love to have seen it.oldtimehockey.gif

Don't have Versus.

As I may have mentioned to you before, the NHL has taken away my sport.

Best will probably have the miniscule numbers Versus drew for Sharks-Stars. Best, too, laments the fact that the NHL has essentially removed itself from the discussion by botching their television contract, although he doesn't seem to whine about it as much as I do. He really should whine about it. In print. Maybe the NHL suits will pay attention and fix their broken sport.

(Yes, I did see Rangers-Penguins Game 5, and it was a beauty. Thank you, NBC ... come to think of it, this will be like the old days. You know, one game on television a week ... thanks again, geniuses of the NHL for taking away my sport.)

... I'm sorry for carrying on like this, but I grew up playing hockey. It got me through a lot of stuff as a kid. I went to Tam O'Shanter Hockey Camp in Agincourt, Ontario. My buddy stole a pair of ankle guards from a nearby department store, and I didn't report it. I'm sorry. Tam O'Shanter eventually burned down. It is now a shopping center. Some of my instructors were Peter Mahovolich, Ron Stewart, and former linesman John D'Amico.

I'm glad I have Black N Gold. He understands. Good luck against the Flyers. I will now be a Penguins fan because of you.

This Crosby kid really is good.

The game started at 9:10 and Versus didn't have their own crew there they used the TSN feed. I gave up at 1am. San Jose folds again, now it's the Red Wings turn, usually they lose to San Jose, so we'll see. If you have digital cable VERSUS is available for free, even on my cable system which doesn't even have FSN Florida which carries all the good stuff anyone down here would wanna see.

Sandy:

Thanks. All that digital cable stuff is Best's domain. All I want to do is turn on my television, use the remote, and find a hockey game. I cannot do that. I used to be able to do that when the NHL had the sense to sign a contract with ESPN.

I will try and have Best come over and figure this out. He will have some time on his hands now that his 52-post day is over.

Get FiOS. It has VS. Plus it's a better product then crooked Cablevision

"This Crosby kid really is good"

I think Malkin's better.....but that's just my opinion.
Crosby gets the ink cuz he's North American and can speak English.

Speaking of former Ranger Ron Stewart....I always thought he had a face that resembled a 2 day old blueberry muffin.

And finally, I am simply amazed that in the media center of the universe you poor souls back there can't get Versus. In fact, it was Versus that got me back into being a hockey junkie last year. I had pretty much been away from the game since roughly 1986 as parenting and coaching kids and playing hardball myself got me off the barcolounger.
Thanks to Versus (and I am NOT championing their abilities here) I morphed over to a buck and half investment in NHL Center Ice (EVERY game) AND the NHL Network which show lots of vintage old games. (As well as the best collection of sports commercials I have EVER seen on the NHL Network with "the coach").

I find it incredible that Versus is not available within the largest population base in the country.
Is it really a problem with the NHL or perhaps.... the Dolans?

Yes, it is unfortunate that Versus doesn't have quite the same coverage as say ... oh ... ESPN ... and thus gets into far fewer homes.

In fact, a disturbingly large portion of the New York area is not wired for Versus in traditional cable outlets.

Versus has no doubt increased its coverage in recent months/years, which means it was actually worse before. Which means that the NHL was even dumber for signing the deal in the first place.

Don't get me started.

Versus wasn't available in NY until they got NHL coverage and the delightful Dolans put it on their sports pay tier in the 400 channels area. First Ranger game of the season was on Versus, nobody could see it because MSG couldn't televise it. The calls started, the next day Versus was no longer on the pay sports channel tier of (at least) Cablevision NYC. I have no idea about what happened with Time-Warner. Versus was on channel 406 on Cablevision NYC. NHL Center Ice is great, watching Don Cherry on Saturday nights on "Hockey Night in Canada" after a brew or three is fun.
