Looks like Giants GM Jerry Reese will sit things out in the early part of free agency, especially with the handful of elite free agents expected to get silly money because of the lack of big names on the open market.
There's also some sobering news in the team's quest to re-sign soon-to-be-unrestricted free agents Gibril Wilson, Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor. I'm told it's virtually inconceivable that the team will re-sign Wilson unless his contract demands decrease (ain't gonna happen) and that it's "doubtful" Mitchell and Torbor will be re-signed before the free agency period opens at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
The team still has some hope of re-upping Mitchell and Torbor, but with the free agent market to insanely thin this year, both players figure to get big paydays on the open market. There are some fallback plans, though. Gerris Wilkinson would likely fill in for Mitchell, and Mathias Kiwanuka could return at Torbor's outside linebacker spot.
Kiwi at least gives the Giants flexibility, because he played at linebacker last year before getting hurt, and he can also make an easy transition back to defensive end if Michael Strahan retires.
