Here's what he had to say on a conference call today about why he left the field with one second to play:
"I wasn't really sure of the time. Everybody started on to the field and then I got over there and I wanted to congratulate Tom. I've been in that situation before after the game. I wanted to get over there and congratulate him and congratulate him on the championship. There really wasn't much left at that point."
Only one thing: Referee Mike Carey went up to Belichick and let him know that there was still one second left and a play had to be run.
We reiterate our point from a previous post: Suppose the Giants fumbled the snap on Manning's kneel-down (I realize it's a long shot, but whatever) and suppose the ball is recovered by the Patriots and returned for the game-winning touchdown.
What then?

What then? Belichick comes back out of the tunnel and everyone shakes his hand instead. What else could possibly happen?
He shouldn't have left. It wasn't good sportsmanship. Or maybe he had an overactive bladder and didn't want to admit it.
Does anyone else find it amusing / offputting that the coach who had a mantra of "60 minutes" all season long decided that 59:59 of the Super Bowl was enough? How can he look at his team in 2008 and tell them that they have to work hard the entire game?
Great point, Gridder Tom.
