Packers practice with frozen balls

As a way to get ready for tomorrow's NFC Championship Game at frigid Lambeau Field, Packers coach Mike McCarthy had the players use frozen footballs during practice. frozenfootball

He said he came up with the idea while thinking about how some teams dip the ball in water to prepare for games they know will be played in rainy conditions. So he took it one step further and froze the balls, mostly as a way to get the receivers used to catching them.

McCarthy had the balls placed in a portable freezer at practice, and between plays, the equipment men would take a ball from the freezer and give it to the players to use for the next play.

"Didn't tell the players about it and just rolled them in there on Wednesday and did it throughout the week," McCarthy said. "Really, I was just trying to get them to focus more on catching the football. We had a couple of quarterback-center exchange problems in the shotgun there on Wednesday, but I thought they handled it very well."

I wonder if they found out whether the flagpole rule applies.

Wet balls. Frozen balls. So, what’s next, Snotty Balls? Bloody Balls? Dirty Balls? Slime Balls? Call Nickelodeon!

It's cold in Albany too! I spent the morning at a pheasant shoot freezing but having a great time. Didn't see any balls there, frozen or otherwise. My huntin' dawg is a gal.
