Jim Fassel to the Redskins?

Former Giants head coach Jim Fassel is still holding out hope of becoming a head coach again, and he’s had serious discussions with the Redskins about the job vacated when Joe Gibbs retired.

Fassel was flown in yesterday by team owner Dan Snyder from Green Bay, where Fassel was broadcasting the Giants-Packers game for the Westwood One Radio Network. The two met for about five hours, although Fassel returned to his home in Arizona late yesterday, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The two were expected to have further discussions later today.

It's no lock that Fassel gets the job, especially with assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in the mix. It is worth noting, however, that Snyder was impressed with Fassel when he interviewed him in 2004. Had Gibbs not decided to resume coaching that season, Fassel would have been a serious candidate to get the job.

Greetings Bob!

I have a question/scenario concerning our present/future coach.

What length of extension is Coughlin looking for? Is this a "final" contract for him?

Is it possible for Giant management to give Coughlin a three year extension, with the provision that he retires at the end of the term, with full glory and honors. Then have Coach Spagnuolo (appointed heir apparent after the Super Bowl) take over. What do you think?

BTW.............Dad and I had a great time at Raymond James a few weeks ago? Who knew it was just the beginning!

Chris:

Glad you enjoyed Tampa. Been quite a ride indeed.

The Giants are free to do whatever they like as far as Coughlin is concerned, and it's certainly possible - although unlikely - for them to try and forge an agreement with Spagnuolo that he will take over when Coughlin is done.

But if TC is looking for more than three years - and chances are he is - I don't see it happening.

Spagnuolo's window of opportunity is here, and I think he will take advantage of it - if not this year, then certainly in 2009.

I've always had sorta a soft spot for Fassel and could never fully understand why he hasn't landed a new coaching gig sooner. He's no scheming genius, but he has the ability to motivate a mediocre team to the upper echlon. His decision to work under Brian Billick was a mistake that clearly cost him in terms of getting a new job.

I respectfully disagree, Lance. Fassel is an OC at best, I'd love to see that doltish owner put him in charge of a division rival. Nice man, utterly incompetent in a leadership role.
