This is why you don't rush to judgement

Police have arrested four men in connection with the shooting death of Redskins safety Sean Taylor, and the authorities indicate that at least two of the men has already made a confession about the incident.

It appears the shooting was, in fact, connected to a burglary, and at this point, police aren't saying whether any of the men knew Taylor. So while plenty of folks around the country have speculated that Taylor had it coming because of his previous involvement with shady people in his life, it appears that this could very well be a case of a robbery gone bad.

Which is why it is very, very important not to rush to judgement in these cases. No matter what the circumstances of a person's life, the facts must first be known before deciding what to believe. I realize we're in a need-to-know-immediately world, but that's still no excuse for making any sweeping statements when the circumstances simply aren't clear.

Here's what Miami-Dade police Director Robert Park said of the incident:

"They were certainly not looking to go there and kill anyone," Parker said. Parker said authorities had more than one confession but would not elaborate.

It still may turn out that the men knew Taylor and were exacting some sort of revenge. And if that turns out to be the case, then it is appropriate to pass judgement. But Parker's above statement indicates it is more likely connected to a botched robbery.

So regardless of Taylor's troubled past, it's important not to make any connection before the facts are in. The Duke lacrosse rape case is the classic example, where the players were wrongly accused and the facts bore that out, taking down an inept district attorney in the process.

No use making that mistake again here. We need to wait until all the facts are in.

Thank you Bob. Thank you for your stories this week and for your telling of it. You are so right about the rushing to judgment. It is so sad that people who had no first hand knowledge wanted to brush one general stroke about Mr. Taylor.

Just goes to show you how stupid and ignorant Mike and the Mad Dog really are.
