The NFL has upheld the one-game suspension of Cowboys safety Roy Williams for his repeated use of the "horse collar" tackle. He was penalized for the infraction in Sunday's game against the Eagles when he brought down quarterback Donovan McNabb with the illegal technique. Williams will be out a $35,000 game check.
One interesting side note to this: Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens, who suffered a broken leg when he was brought down by Williams with a horse collar tackle in 2004, was pretty up front in criticizing Williams' tackle of McNabb. He said it brought back bad memories of his injury.
"The way he tackles is very, very dangerous," Owens said. "I think he needs to do something to kind of correct that. Other than that, Roy is a great guy. But the thing is, you have to be safe. I know this is a violent game, but you have to tackle safely. ... You don't want to end a guy's career. And to tackle someone in that manner, it's just not right."
Amen.
