Here's a link to the the audio of their WFAN interview with yours truly this morning. (scroll down a ways and look on the left side of the page)
Neil Best has been kind enough - again - to give props our way. We are truly humbled.
One of the coolest things about being an old guy in this business is that I get to watch the transition of people like Boomer Esiason from NFL quarterback to New York media mogul ... and even get to talk to them as it's happening.
Boomer and I go back to the horror show that the Jets had become in the mid-1990s, and he has been one of the best interview subjects I've ever come across. (Not just blowing smoke because he had me on his program this morning ... well, maybe a little, but he really lit it up when it came to dealing with the press during his playing days.)
Thanks to Craig for the props over our recent run of stories. I will never view the word "skittish" again in quite the same way.
And now, we wait for the bombshell George Mitchell report. It will be a bad day in the Bronx, I'm afraid.

i thought you were a long time listener first time caller.
So Bob, you gonna print a retraction for your BS sensationalized story about how Mangini is a cheater too?
Especially now that you've been proven spectacularly wrong?

Eh, why bother? Retractions aren't as fun as appearances on "SportsCenter."
Dave:
No need to retract anything. We reported yesterday that the Jets were seen videotaping from the endzone by the Patriots, the cameraman was told to get out, and also wrote that the Jets admitted they were taping from the endzone and that they thought they'd had permission. That's what happened.
"Retraction" was the wrong word. It's not really you, Bob...I'm just kinda ticked at the media in general. Yesterday, everyone's saying "hey, look...the Jets cheated too!" Which clearly was false, according to all of the evidence in your story. Then today the Post report comes out completely exonerating the Jets...and SI.com buries it on the "Truth and Rumors" page. ESPN.com didn't even carry it. Blah. Too much sensationalism at the Worldwide Leader.
Dave:
Understood. And I understand the "ticked at the media" comment.
We were careful not to label this a cheating thing, and the fact that our story came out the same day that Mangini explained himself in more detail made it pretty evident that the Jets were convinced that what they were doing was permitted.
But after Spygate, when the words "videotape, Jets and Patriots" appear in the same story, and you had a confrontation between the Patriots and the Jets during a game in which a cameraman was told to get lost, it's going to be an issue.
Just as an aside, as Tom Rock and I were reporting the story, we purposely did not use the phrase "illegally taping the game."
Bob--
I gotcha...the story you and Rock wrote was, in my opinion, pretty straightforward--it certainly didn't make any accusations. Of course, ESPN, looking for a compelling storyline for a game that will likely end up being 77-10, seized on it as evidence that Mangini is a rat.
Quick aside: I thought that William Rhoden's superb piece about Spygate in today's New York Times was a perfect counterpoint to ESPN's breathless sensationalism.
I like Bill's column, too. It's interesting how the worm has turned on this issue. At first, it was piling on Belichick. Then it was piling on Mangini. Bill then defends Mangini.
Strange.
Very nice audio with B&C there BG. Unfortunate attempt at a "skittish" joke 1/2 way through, but o/w a good listen....
A few points that along with your story may explain what happened in week 1 (Its been a long day at the office, sorry if others already posted this:).
The Jets beat the Pats in Boston last year, come back for a playoff game and suddenly the Pats aren't so friendly, kicking their cameraman out of the stadium.
The next time they play the Pats what do they see? Ilegal taping by the Pats in the Jets (cough) stadium?!?
What would you do?
