Week 9 picks: Best weekend of the season?

This is not just a good weekend of NFL football coming up, people. It’s a great one. And not just because Colts-Patriots is finally upon us, with a battle of the two unbeatens.

There is Cowboys-Iggles in Philly. And Packers-Chiefs in KC. And Ravens-Steelers in the ‘Burgh.

This, ladies in gentlemen, is what we live for. Here goes:

Patriots over Colts: This has turned into the best rivalry this decade, and Sunday’s game won’t disappoint. The Colts are playing even better than last year, when they won it all, but the Patriots are playing better than ever … like, maybe any team ever! Marvin Harrison (knee) missed practice again yesterday, and my gut tells me he won’t play. Even if he does, he won’t be anywhere near full strength. The way the Patriots are going, I don’t think there’s a team out there capable of beating them right now. Even if it’s the defending Super Bowl champs playing at home.

Eagles over Cowboys: Tony Romo is flush with money from his new contract. Terrell Owens hasn’t said a peep in weeks. And the Cowboys are well rested from a bye. The Eagles haven’t been themselves all season, and it doesn’t help that Andy Reid is going through major off-field issues with his son being sentenced to jail this week. Even so, I’m going with the more desperate team in this one, and that’s Philly.

Steelers over Ravens: Ravens have been beaten up with injuries all season, but Steve McNair is as healthy as he’s ever been, and Jonathan Ogden appears ready to play, although we’ll believe it when we see it. No matter, though. Pittsburgh is way too tough at home. Bill Cowher was 9-0 at home on Monday nights. Mike Tomlin will continue the tradition.

Chiefs over Packers: Very, very tough one to call here, mostly because we are still waiting for the other shoe to drop with the Packers, and because the Chiefs are one of the hardest teams to read this year. Is quarterback Damon Huard really capable of leading this team to the playoffs? We don’t think so, but his team is 4-3 and he’s doing just enough to get by. Plus, the defense is getting better every week. When in doubt, go with the home team.

Saints over Jaguars
: Don’t look now, but the Saints are right back in it. After starting the season 0-4, they’ve won three straight and are playing like they were during last year’s playoff run. Drew Brees is back to the efficient passer he’s been through the latter part of his career, and Reggie Bush, nicked up a little this week, is doing just enough in the running and passing games. The real issue for New Orleans is the defense, but against Quinn Gray on Sunday, they should be good enough.

Redskins over Jets: Pete Kendall gets his revenge! The Jets get to look face-to-face at the first big reason their season has gone down the tubes. They wouldn’t give the veteran guard the $1 million he insists they promised, and the ensuing public relations disaster has snowballed into the 1-7 travesty they now face.

Chargers over Vikings: Like the Saints, the Chargers are back to form after a rocky start. Can’t see the Vikings keeping up in this one.

Browns over Seahawks: Another gut feeling here: The Seahawks are coming off the bye and will be sluggish. Mike Holmgren gave them the entire week off, and while the players loved it, we think it’ll lead to some problems on game day. The Browns, meanwhile, have won two straight for the first time since 2003 and are actually allowing themselves to think about a playoff run.

Bills over Bengals: J.P. Losman is back, and he gets a chance to reclaim the job taken away from him by rookie Trent Edwards, who is out with a wrist problem. The Bills are an improving team that’s been playing well of late, and the Bengals are a disaster. (This one’s for you, NKR – she’s a big Bills fan … not!)

Falcons over 49ers: There was almost a locker room insurrection when coach Bobby Petrino dumped popular veteran DT Grady Jackson. But they had the bye week to settle things down, and we believe in Petrino as a coach. He doesn’t have the horses, but this isn’t Joe Montana & Co. riding into town this weekend.

Buccaneers over Cardinals: After frittering the game away last weekend at home against the Jaguars, we just can’t see the Bucs doing the same against Arizona.

Lions over Broncos: The best under-the-radar story of the year: the Lions, who have been the laughingstock of the NFL since Matt Millen took over in the front office, but who are now a legitimately solid team.

Titans over Panthers: Vince Young is still far from a complete quarterback, but he’s got the advantage of a solid running game and an emerging defense. That combination should be enough to vanquish the quarterback-starved Panthers.

Raiders over Texans: Raiders will handle Sage Rosenfels, who starts in place of David Carr.

What you failed to mention is how good the Packers defense is. Kansas City will have a hard time scoring enough points to beat the Packers.

Karl,

You seized on the same game I did. The other wildcard is Herm. Did he utilize the bye week to properly prep for the Packers?

Just based on Farve vs. Herm Edwards... I'm going with Farve.

The Pack take an early lead and never relinquish.

Ok, I will be honest. Looking over all these games again, I agree with most of the picks. The only game I disagree with is the Packer-Chief game. I am rooting for the Colts to win, but I think the Patriots are unstoppable. They will not lose until Brady gets his leg broken on a blitz in the 4th quarter when they are passing the ball up 45-0 against the Jets.

Karl, Black N Gold:

I'll be very honest with you. That game gives me fits trying to figure it out. The problem is the Chiefs. You just don't know which team is gonna show up - the one that beat San Diego on the road, or the one that got waxed in Houston.
