Merriman and Wilson get fined for "horse collar" tackles

Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was fined $7,500 for his "horse collar" tackle on Colts running back Joseph Addai in Sunday night's game.

And Cardinals defensive back Adrian Wilson was nailed with a $10,000 for his "horse collar" tackle on Lions running back Kevin Jones in last Sunday's game. It was Williams' second fine this season for unnecessary roughness.

As we told you before, the NFL looked very closely at Roy Williams' open-field tackle of Giants receiver Amani Toomer in the Giants-Cowboys game, but ruled that Williams did not use the "horse collar" technique on the play.

Where does the term "horse collar" come from?
What is it about that particular move that has anything to do with horses?
Maybe some rodeo term like calf-roping?

Maybe someone here could coin a better phrase.

Colombian neck tie?
"Noose"tackle?

Can't they make a piece of equipment to cover up the gap and prevent players from doing it?

Maybe someone here could coin a better term for it.

"noose" tackle
"Colombian neck tie"
"Merriman"
