Jets need a new nickname; suggestions welcome

Got an e-mail from one of our regular contributors, Richard Siegelman, the dude we refer to as "Teacher Man" because he was ... uh ... a teacher. Anyway, Mr. S. enunciates perfectly what I've always thought of the Jets' "Gang Green" nickname. Read for yourself: terribletowel.jpg

"Even if the Jets' unfortunate nickname, "Gang Green", is not the cause of all their problems since 1969, I suggest a "kinder, gentler" nickname for the team. Aside from all the negative connotations associated with actual criminal "gangs", the condition of "gangrene" is a particularly disgusting disease of decay - which often leads to amputation and death.. Any other nickname would be an improvement. I'll suggest "Gung-Ho Green" as a discussion starter, but I'm sure all you sportswriters and fans can come up with something even better. You can't do worse than the sound of "Gang Green".

"Teacher Man" is right on point. And I'll add to it that Gang Green seems to be a takeoff on Big Blue, which is a very cool nickname that the Giants' own. Just another example of the Jets' second-class citizenry in our area.

... Wait! I've got it!

Was at the Jets' game yesterday, and what with all those Steelers fans waving towels and making it feel as if we were in Pittsburgh, how about "Black N Gold."

It does have a nice ring to it :-)

Just a little something to cheer you up on a miserable Monday.

You're one of the few how knows just how miserable it is ... Most folks here at work don't know I'm a Steelers fan... thank God!

Well, while I may have lost significant face with my NFL allegiance - I'm still doing quite nice in Adam Abramson's side of the house... :-)

Can't give up complete hope though... The fish are next!

Considering the way the Steelers against the Jet's, Bronco's and Cardinals this year Jokeland last year, and Texas in 2002, I wish we were playing the Packers, Cowboys, Colts or Pats. :-)

Oh well, you know what they say about getting back up on the horse!

Hi-Ho-Silver (and no, that wasn't a reference to Don Imus) :-)

Mean Green?

I know, Black N Gold'll probably sue for copyright infringement...

Uh, The Green N White?

I think first the Jets need to change their sucky colors. Anything but aqua, coral, white and navy. Or navy blue, light blue, red, light red, white, royal, and nickel.

I really like "Nautical Blue", "New Century Silver", red, and white, but I think those colors are taken.

Thought of a few with the current colors:

Clean n Green - hmm. Doesn't really apply to an NFL team.
The Green Party - More apt, perhaps, but taken.
Big Green Men - they put the little green men in their place.
The Fighting Algae
The Greenbacks - you have Quarterbacks, Nickelbacks... And of course the obvious reference.

Fighting Algae? How about The Chlorophyllies? No, wait, wrong city, wrong sport...

Green Machine?

The Jolly Green Jets?

NKR:

Your effort is brilliant. Do I smell a comment contest winner?

btw, were you happy the Patriots won on Sunday night?

"Gang Green" would have to go away anyway, as it violates Mangini's "We don't talk about injuries/illnesses" policy.

Of course, wait until they have to talk about the sponsor of their NJ training facility.

The Green Monster? Where have I heard that before?

The Big Green Wrecking Machine. Will the Giants mind?

How about "The Green Party, decaying naturally since 1969"

or Welcome to Greenland, Now go home.

Very happy about the Patriots. It was poetry.

And I really hate to see a good laptop wasted.

You know, it just occurred to me that using the words "eat" and "laptop" might not be the best two words to use in one sentence. The Church Lady just wouldn't understand.

NKR, you've gone completely over the edge.

Were you hanging around near Gate D at Giants Stadium the other day, by any chance?

I've been over the edge for a long time. I just hide it pretty well.

I saw a 'Cuse sticker on a car at the grocery store parking lot today which made me think of another nickname:

Go 'Ants!

Wrong team.

Go 'Ets!
