More than 20 years after being the first overall selection in the 1987 draft, Vinny Testaverde has agreed to terms on a contract with the Carolina Panthers, a team that wasn't even in the NFL when Testaverde was taken first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The deal is contingent on Testaverde passing a physical.
Testaverde, 43, adds a veteran presence to a Panthers team that will be without starter Jake Delhomme for the rest of the season. Delhomme will undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his elbow.
Vinny T. may have to play sooner rather than later. Starter David Carr, himself a former No. 1 pick for the Texans, suffered a bruised back last week against New Orleans, and he's iffy for this weekend's game against Arizona.
