Belichick fined $500,000; Pats to forfeit first-round pick
Just heard back from league sources who will announce that Bill Belichick has been fined $500,000, the maximum allowable under NFL rules, and that the Patriots will surrender their first-round pick in 2008 if they make the playoffs.
If the don't make the playoffs, they will surrender their second- and third-round picks.
In addition, the Patriots were fined $250,000.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he considered suspending Belichick, but that the maximum fine, coupled with the draft picks, would be a more long-lasting punishment.

Why isn't there a longer investigation into this matter? Question the camera operator in question? Demand a viewing of all video media currently in the Pats possession. Interview the players.
Query 1- If we're supposed to believe that they did this only once (or is that twice- see Green Bay), why wouldn't he save this trick for the tougher opponents on his schedule (see San Diego or Indy).
Query 2- Clearly they wouldn't break this rule, and risk the punnishment- unless there was substantial benefit to be derived- AND THE ONLY WAY FOR THE PATS TO BENEFIT FROM THIS INFO IS IF BRADY IS INVOLVED. He is the only person in a position to utilize this information and adjust accordingly in the course of a game. A lot of the- it's no big deal- argument seemed to center around- how could the offense utilize this info in time to help the offense during the ongoing game. THE ONLY ANSWER is that the misappropriated information is relayed to BRADY, who is thereafter able to watch the sidelines and know exactly what is coming at him.
Penalize them for this wrong- then investigate for a pattern of abuse- If it is proven to be a pattern of abuse- there should be Suspensions.
WHAT ABOUT THE DRAFT PICKS. I keep reading that the Pats will forfeit the pick, it sounds like they are going to just evaporate- And everyone would bump up?? I Don't Understand- there was an aggrieved team in this equation, a team that was wronged by this violation- SHOULDN'T THIS DRAFT PICK GO TO THE JETS???
They can't give a draft pick to the Jets. That would be unfair to the other teams in the league. Good point on what do they do at the draft, though.
