Neil Best is insane

How else do you describe former Newsday Giants beat reporter Neil Best, who is reduced to bragging that he has set a personal best of 18 blog posts in a single day.

To be in position to blog so prolifically requires one to stay indoors for huge amounts of time, and Best confirmed in a phone conversation this morning that the furthest he got during yesterday's record-setting performance was his driveway. I did not ask, nor did he divulge, whether he showered and dressed at any point during the day. He also admits that he often goes days without crossing the border of the town in which he lives. And he conceded the highlight of his day yesterday was getting a link to his column on Deadspin.com.

We fear, therefore, that Best is quickly descending into the "house-bound agoraphobe" that we used to hear about - ironically enough, with the old WFAN follow-up to the Imus-In-The-Morning program, the former radio personality Best has essentially built his blogosphere around.

Meanwhile, Newsday colleague Arthur Staple, who has so capably replaced Best on the Giants beat, is slugging it out in Albany, giving practice-by-practice reports, and even injecting some of his witty humor with lines about Michael Strahan's fines reaching a point (I think it was $85,000 or so) that is "officially a lot of dough to just about everyone in the free world."

Best is also reduced to bragging about the massive amount of hits he's been getting, and give him credit. He's created a nice niche here. He has also challenged me to a hits duel, which I welcome in the coming months.

Then again, how do I stand a chance when I actually have to leave my house to report on the Jets, Giants and NFL?

I technically left the border of my town today - by about 200 yards - to purchase staples (no pun intended) such as skim milk, calcium orange juice, lox and shrimp.

I a previous life, I would not have been at home at all today. I would have been in Albany, filling some space with training camp drivel, then playing basketball or tennis with fellow writers, or maybe going out to dinner, then coming back to a cool, quiet hotel room in Albany, compiling some Marriott points and going to bed. I haven't stayed overnight for a work assignment in 13 friggin' months now. But this is the life I've chosen. Congratulations A-Rod. Now please, Barry, end our pain tonight.

What's at stake in this blog hits duel?

My mouse is for sale, too, so whoever wants to make me the best offer for my clicks, feel free.
