As soon as I heard Jeremy Shockey had added close to 20 pounds in the off-season - ostensibly muscle, due to a rigorous training regimen - I felt there would be trouble ahead.
His absence from practice this morning due to a sore upper leg only confirms those suspicions.
Shockey is a workout fiend and always comes to camp with muscles bulging. But with the added weight, coupled with a history of ankle problems, it seemed only natural that he'd risk further leg problems during the season.
Shockey wanted to add the weight to be stronger going into the season, but the human body can only take so much stress. And adding as much weight as he did added to the pressure he's putting on his body.
We'll see what happens moving forward, and I'm sure Shockey will be back at practice soon. But the fact that he's on the sidelines this early has to be somewhat troubling to the Giants, who need their Pro Bowl tight end on the field as much as possible, both as a blocker and a receiver. Especially without much behind him, now that Visanthe Shiancoe left as a free agent.
