Welcome to Blogville

Good day from Bob the Blogger, who takes his maiden voyage in this latest Internet craze. Only regret is that Ken Berger is no longer around to goof on. But we’ll make up for that by taking our share of jabs at new Newsday Jets beat hack Tom Rock, an earnest fellow who will provide you with all you need to know about the Jets, and Giants beat man Arthur Staple, whose sense of humor is as dry as the Sahara, although he occasionally fires off a decent line every few days . . .

Before we begin, a Happy Birthday shout-out to big brother Rich out in Eugene, Oregon. Jets fans will be particularly interested to know that Rich closely followed the college career of Kellen Clemens, and he reports back that the Jets got themselves a steal. Big arm, big heart, big future. Of course, that future might come along sooner rather than later, as Jets rookie coach Eric Mangini still won’t name his starting QB. The hunch here is that he goes with Chadwick, but that there could be a quick hook if he doesn’t get this team into the endzone quickly enough . . .

By the way, did you know that Laveranues Coles once called Berger “Little Media Man.” Just wait until Berger starts covering the NBA. They’ll call him Mugsy Bogues . . .

One of the coolest things ever was playing an extra in the movie Invincible, which came out on Friday and was the weekend’s leading money-maker. Hanging out at last Wednesday’s premiere was just as cool. The guest-list was a Who’s Who of football and acting, including Mark Wahlberg, Michael Strahan, Ottis Anderson, Michael Nouri, Elizabeth Banks and another guest who introduced himself to my two daughters by shaking hands and saying, “Hi, I’m Roger.” The girls had no idea they were meeting newly anointed NFL commish Roger Goodell . . .

A few notes to catch up on around the league . . .

Look for Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzales to agree on a contract extension that will far exceed any deal signed by a tight end in recent years, including Antonio Gates and Jeremy Shockey. Gonzales is expected to finalize the deal shortly before the start of the regular season, according to sources . . .

Drew Bledsoe will be the Cowboys’ starter heading into the season, but Bill Parcells has been very impressed with backup Tony Romo. It would be a surprise to see Romo supplant Bledsoe early, but if he struggles for a prolonged period of time, Parcells might make the switch. The Cowboys, meanwhile, are interested in extending Romo’s contract. Romo’s deal expires after the season, and he could be a hot commodity in the off-season after the improvement he’s shown . . .

The Cowboys decided to part ways with Drew Henson, even though he’s owed more than $3.5 million in guaranteed salary, because he couldn’t beat out Romo as the backup. The No. 3 quarterback right now is rookie free agent Matt Baker . . .

The Colts still aren’t sure whether Dominic Rhodes or rookie Joseph Addai will handle the bulk of the carries in the absence of Edgerrin James, who is now in Arizona. It’s possible the Colts will platoon the runners, although a lot will depend on how well they pick up the blitz. In addition to his prolific running, James was superb in blitz pickup . . .

The Jaguars had hoped to use Greg Jones to spell the oft-injured Fred Taylor, but that plan is now out the window because Jones is expected to miss the season with a torn ACL . . .

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Lions will part ways with former first-round receiver Charles Rogers. Another of their first-round receivers, Mike Williams, will likely be the third or fourth receiver – and there’s even a chance he gets cut, too. Williams is battling weight problems, and he was fined heavily last year for missed meetings . . .

It’s almost a foregone conclusion that J.P. Losman will be the Bills starting quarterback after what turned out to be a dud of a training camp competition. Kelly Holcomb is a locker room favorite, but he’s struggled to adjust to new offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild’s system . . .

Don’t be surprised to see Dolphins coach Nick Saban pore over the waiver wire this week for backup help at running back. Without Ricky Williams, who is serving a one-year suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, Saban wants better depth behind starter Ronnie Brown . . .

The big reason the Falcons were willing to trade backup running back T.J. Duckett was the emergence of rookie tailback Jerious Norwood. He’ll start the season as Warrick Dunn’s backup . . .

It would be a shock not to see Brian Griese be the Bears starting quarterback at some point this season. Rex Grossman went into camp as the No. 1, but Griese has been the better quarterback so far . . .

Vikings rookie quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is the backup to Brad Johnson. It’s a mild surprise, considering the Vikings signed Eagles castoff Mike McMahon, who was coached by Brad Childress, now the Vikings’ head coach. But McMahon has been brutal so far in the preseason . . .

Eagles rookie Brodrick Bunkley has been terrific in camp, despite a contract holdout . . .

ttyl . . .

Hey Bob...Welcome to Bloggersville...Let's hope that Belichick's magic will rub off on Man-Genie and give the Jets a winning season !

Seriously, how hot is Elizabeth Banks in real life?

Was Terrell Owens on the Dallas sideline during the 49er game?

bob, nice blog. glad to see you've amassed FOUR whole comments so far. keep up the good work.

Bob, Nice to see you haven't lost your anti-Steelers bias.
Any team that's more than 50 miles from the ocean is automatically out of contention in every poll you've ever posted.
