This just in! Terrell Owens practices twice in a row, might play in preseason game! Stop the presses! Please, get the season started already, get Owens on the field, and let him catch some passes. Have you ever seen more pub about a player who has practiced so little in the preseason? . . .

Great zinger from former Packers receiver Javon Walker, who was traded to the Broncos in the off-season: “Obviously, we have a chance to be a Super Bowl team,” Walker said. “Obviously, (the Packers) have a chance to win four games.” Ouch . . .

Former NFL cornerback Otis Smith, who played for a while with the Jets, will coach this season with the Patriots. Smith always had terrific instincts, and we think he’ll be able to impart plenty of wisdom to the team’s young secondary . . .

Does anyone think the Raiders stand a chance this year? . . .

The Giants hope to get one final test for players on the bubble in tonight’s game against the Patriots, but Tom Coughlin might not get a very good gauge of things. Why not? Pats coach Bill Belichick is notorious for resting most of his key players as often as possible, and this is the night that he’ll rest virtually his entire starting lineup, give or take a few guys. No need to get anyone hurt 10 days before the opener . . .

I think there’s a very good chance that Kerry Collins opens the season as the Titans’ starter, now that Billy Volek has so publicly expressed his frustration with the team’s acquisition of the former Giants’ starter. Collins, laying low for now, has been busy immersing himself in the Titans’ playbook, while cutting into practice reps normally taken by Volek. Can’t say I blame Volek for being steamed. Even with rookie Vince Young waiting in the wings, it appeared he had a shot of spending most, if not all, this season as the team’s starter. He waited patiently behind Steve McNair until McNair was dealt to Baltimore late in the off-season . . .

Think the Chargers aren’t just a little worried about their quarterback situation? Last year, they traded backup Cleo Lemon to the Dolphins and acquired backup A.J. Feeley, ostensibly to prepare for the eventuality that Drew Brees would be gone and Philip Rivers would become the starter. Well, Brees left and went to New Orleans, Rivers became the starter, but Feeley hasn’t panned out and was released earlier this week. He wound up re-signing with the Eagles . . .

Good to see Newark Star-Ledger Jets beat writer Dave Hutchinson on the mend and back where he belongs – in the paper . . .

Giants fans should watch Carlos Emmons very carefully tonight against the Patriots. Emmons has barely practiced this preseason because of persistent problems with a neck burner . . .

I can’t think of a single player who generated more news with less playing time than Barrett Green. He signed with the Giants as a free agent from Detroit two years ago, promptly tattled to the union on Tom Coughlin’s off-season practice routines, and then could barely get onto the field because of injury problems. P.S. Green was waived this week by the Texans, who went 2-14 last season. Might be time for Green to start selling insurance . . .

Fantasy football sleeper of the day: Drew Carter of Carolina. If the young receiver can stay healthy, he’s gonna have a big year – even with Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson on the same roster.
