Should be interesting to see what happens in Tennessee now that former Giants QB Kerry Collins has landed with Titans. Collins has a legit chance to become the starter over Billy Volek, although it may take a while. Collins will need time to absorb Norm Chow’s offense, so Volek has the advantage for now. Even so, Volek understands his time may not be long in Tennessee. Not only is Collins breathing down his neck, but Vince Young is the long-term answer at the position. The feeling here is Volek will be dealt early in the season, if not before . . .
The only surprise with Chad Pennington being named the starting QB for the Jets is how long it took Eric Mangini to state the obvious. Pennington was head-and-shoulders better than the other three quarterbacks in camp, although it still remains to be seen whether he’ll hold up in the regular season . . .
Curtis Martin starts the season on the PUP list, but it’s only a matter of time before he announces his retirement. At 33 and with all that wear and tear, why should this Hall of Fame caliber back not walk away on his own? . . .
Is it just me, or are Seinfeld re-runs still the most consistently entertaining shows to watch on television? Even my 15-year-old daughter is starting to imitate Elaine by pushing me in the chest and saying, “Get out!” when I tell her something surprising . . .
Pet peeve of the day: Is it really too much to ask people on a train to talk lower when they make a call on their cell phone? Bright, college-educated people apparently don’t understand that you can actually speak quietly and still have the person on the other end of the phone hear you … Okay, I feel better, thanks …
Jason Fabini is having a tough time in Dallas these days. Bill Parcells brought in his former offensive tackle to man the right side, but he’s been beaten out by Marco Columbo. Tuna still might keep Fabini around for depth, though . . .
Looks like Cowboys kicker Mike Vanderjagt might finally be out of Parcells’ doghouse. The former Colts’ kicker, signed to a free agent deal in the off-season, has missed time with a groin injury, which has driven Parcells nuts. But Vanderjagt is back to practice and ready to go . . .
Meanwhile, it’s another day on the bike for T.O., who admitted yesterday he overslept and missed a rehab session, leading to a fine . . .
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he’ll fire whoever leaked the story that T.O. was fined $9,500 for various offenses, which may have included his dog eating his alarm clock. If I were Jones, I’d worry more about the 10 mil he plunked down to get Owens, who might start the season on his exercise bike, not on the field . . .
