Josh Hamilton activated; Chris Davis demoted

BY ADAM RONIS

The Rangers activated Josh Hamilton from the disabled list. Hamilton has been out since June 9 after he he had surgery to repair a torn abdominal muscle. To make room, the Rangers sent Chris Davis to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Davis was hitting just .202 with 15 homers and 33 RBIs, but had 114 strikeouts in 258 at-bats.

Fantasy baseball: National League fantasy All-Stars

BY ADAM RONIS

Here is the Sunday column.
As the All-Star break approaches, it’s time for some first-half awards. Here are the fantasy All-Stars at each position in the National League.
Catcher: Brian McCann (Braves). The catchers in the NL have been a major disappointment. McCann is hitting .308 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs.
Best value: Bengie Molina (Giants)
Biggest bust: Russell Martin (Dodgers)
First base: Albert Pujols (Cardinals). Even Luis Castillo couldn’t drop this one. Pujols is batting .334 with 62 runs, 30 home runs, 77 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. (Prince Fielder deserves a mention).
Best value: Todd Helton (Rockies)
Biggest bust: Conor Jackson (Diamondbacks)
Second base: Chase Utley (Phillies). He is batting .300 with 54 runs, 17 homers and 52 RBIs and seven steals.
Best value: Orlando Hudson (Dodgers)
Biggest bust: Kelly Johnson (Braves)
Third base: David Wright (Mets). Wright has a .337 average, 51 runs, five homers, 42 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He gets a slight nod over Mark Reynolds for a higher average, on-base percentage and more steals.
Best value: Mark Reynolds (Diamondbacks)
Biggest bust: Garrett Atkins (Rockies)
Shortstop: Hanley Ramirez (Marlins). Ramirez is batting .348 with 50 runs, 26 doubles, 13 home runs, 58 RBIs and 12 stolen bases as the No. 3 hitter.
Best value: Miguel Tejada (Astros)
Biggest bust: Jimmy Rollins (Phillies)
Outfielders: Ryan Braun (Brewers). Braun is hitting .327 with 56 runs, 16 home runs, 58 RBIs and six stolen bases.
Raul Ibanez (Phillies). Is it a coincidence the Phillies have floundered since he went on the disabled list? He is hitting .312 with 51 runs, 22 home runs, 59 RBIs and four stolen bases in 250 at-bats.
Matt Kemp (Dodgers). Kemp is solid across the board with a .302 average, 43 runs, 10 home runs, 41 RBIs and 19 stolen bases while consistently hitting at the bottom of the Dodgers lineup.
Best values: Brad Hawpe (Rockies), Justin Upton (Diamondbacks), Juan Pierre (Dodgers)
Biggest busts: Alfonso Soriano (Cubs), Corey Hart (Brewers)
Starting pitchers: Dan Haren (Diamondbacks). A lack of run support leads to a 7-5 record. He has 15 quality starts in 16 starts with a 2.19 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and a 113/15 K/BB ratio in 115 innings.
Tim Lincecum (Giants). The Cy Young award winner has continued his dominance. He is 8-2 with a 2.37 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 132/28 K/BB ratio in 114 innings.
Yovani Gallardo (Brewers). Gallardo is 8-5 with a 2.75 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a114/46 K/BB ratio in 104 2/3 innings.
Javier Vazquez (Braves). The Braves have scored 12 runs in his past eight starts, thus a 5-7 record. He has a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 130/23 K/BB ratio in 112 innings.
Best values: Johnny Cueto (Reds), Chris Carpenter (Cardinals), Wandy Rodriguez (Astros), Jair Jurrjens (Braves)
Biggest busts: Cole Hamels (Phillies), Ricky Nolasco (Marlins)
Relief pitchers: Jonathan Broxton (Dodgers). He is 6-0 with 19 saves in 21 chances and a 2.15 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and a 62/13 K/BB ratio in 37 2/3 innings.
Heath Bell (Padres). He is 3-1 with 22 saves in 23 chances with a 1.34 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and a 36/14 K/BB ratio in 33 2/3 innings.
Best values: Huston Street (Rockies), Trevor Hoffman (Brewers)
Biggest busts: Brad Lidge (Phillies), Joel Hanrahan (Pirates)

All statistics through Thursday.

Fantasy baseball: AL Thursday wrap and news

BY ADAM RONIS

It happens every season. Someone sees that Mark Buehrle is still available in the draft and they grimace. Then he falls and falls and becomes a great value for someone. He's doing it again. He won't get a ton of strikeouts, but he gives you quality innings. He has pitched at least 201 innings in eight straight seasons with an ERA under 4 in six of those seasons.

He beat the Royals to improve to 8-2 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He went 8 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, one run, walked none and struck out one.

Bobby Jenks got the final two outs for save No. 19.

Jayson Nix started at shortstop in place of Alexei Ramirez, who was sidelined with a finger injury, and went 2-for-4 with his sixth homer.

Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and his 17th stolen base. He is batting .370.

Russell Branyan hit his 20th homer but has just 42 RBIs.

If you're looking for a fill-in, pick up Franklin Gutierrez. He has been very hot and went 3-for-5 with his eighth homer and is batting .285.

Hideki Matsui went 2-for-3 with his 11th homer and three RBIs.

CC Sabathia had his worst start in a while. He went just 5 2/3 innings and allowed 10 hits, six runs, three walks and struck out eight.

Luke Scott hit his 16th homer.

Chone Figgins went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. He has 57 runs and 24 stolen bases\.

Bobby Abreu went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs. He has six homers and 48 RBIs.

John Lackey went eight innings and allowed four hits, two runs, one walk and struck out seven. He is 3-3 with a 4.70 ERA.

Brian Fuentes picked up save No. 23.

No runs for Vazquez

BY ADAM RONIS

Unless you play fantasy baseball or are a die-hard Braves fan, if they exist, you don't know how good Javier Vazquez has pitched this season. He deserves to make the All-Star game, but likely won't because he has just five wins and plays for a team currently under .500.

But as I have said many times, you can't measure a pitcher by wins. The Braves don't score many runs and Jair Jurrjens hasn't received much run support either, but Vazquez gets just about nothing. Vazquez didn't pitch deep into the game tonight against the Phillies because he got to 109 pitches in the sixth inning. Still, he went 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, walked none and struck out five in a no-decision.

The Braves have scored 12 runs in the past eight games Vazquez has started and he has one win in that span. He is 5-7 with a 3.05 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 130/23 K/BB ratio in 112 innings.

Vazquez has always had a good skill set, but never seems to enter the upper echelon. I really liked him this season because he moved to Atlanta after pitching in Arizona and in Chicago with the White Sox in parks that were homer-friendly. I thought Vazquez was a good bet for 200 innings and 200 strikeouts, which he has done two years straight and came up just short in the strikeout department the previous two years.

Vazquez is just another example of why wins are misleading and why it is very difficult to project wins.

Fantasy baseball: NL Thursday wrap and news

BY ADAM RONIS

We have seen midges flood Cleveland. A ball hit a bird during a play on the game-winning hit in Cleveland and now a bee delay? Yes, that's right. There was a 52-minute bee delay in San Diego tonight as a slew of bees were in the leftfield area.

Mark Reynolds is providing tremendous fantasy value for owners. He went in most drafts between rounds 14-18. He hit his 22nd homer and has 57 RBIs and is batting .270 with 13 stolen bases. Chris Davis and Reynolds had similar profiles except that Reynolds proved last season he could do it and could steal bases. Davis had a limited sample last year and the two went 10 rounds apart.

Joey Votto went 4-for-6 with the winning hit in the 10th inning and is batting .366.

Doug Davis allowed one earned run or less for the third straight start, but got a no-decision. He went seven innings and allowed seven hits, one run, walked four and struck out five.

Chad Qualls blew his fourth save of the season.

Aaron Harang went seven innings and allowed four hits, two runs, three walks and struck out eight in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks. He has a 3.86 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.

Francisco Cordero walked three in the 10th inning, but didn't allow a run for the win.

Fernando Tatis went 3-for-4 with four runs, his third homer, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Ryan Church 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs.

For Adam LaRoche, he has had a good first half. He went 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs. He is batting .270 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs.

Garrett Jones should get a lot of time in the Pirates outfield. He went 3-for-5 and was a single short of the cycle.

Tim Redding could be out of the Mets rotation after a poor start against the Pirates and John Maine and Oliver Perez close to a return. Redding went 2 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, five runs, two walks and struck out two. He has a 6.99 ERA and 1.57 WHIP.

Francisco Rodriguez blew his third save of the season in the ninth inning, but got the win after pitching the 10th inning. He threw 46 pitches and allowed four hits, two runs and a homer.

Paul Maholm was roughed up for the third time in his past four starts. The Mets were hitting the ball very hard against him. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed 11 hits, six runs, one walk and struck out one. He has a 4.69 ERA and 1.48 WHIP. Maholm doesn't get a lot of strikeouts, but induces a lot of groundballs so he will have some starts where he gets hit. He still is worthy of being used in deep mixed leagues.

Michael Bourn has turned himself into a solid fantasy player by getting on base. He went 2-for-5 with two runs and stole his 26th base. He is batting .291.

Scott Hairston went 2-for-4 with an RBI and his eighth stolen base. He is batting .314.

Wandy Rodriguez went through a rough stretch, but has pitched better recently. He improved to 7-6 with a win over the Padres. He went seven innings and allowed seven hits, one run, two walks and struck out five. He has a 3.21 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

Kevin Correia was phenomenal in June and pitched like Jake Peavy in disguise. He went 4-2 with a 3.08 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and a 34/6 K/BB ratio 38 innings. He wasn't going to maintain that pace and didn't pitch well in a loss to the Astros. He went five innings and allowed eight hits, six runs, walked three and struck out three. He's still worth using in mixed leagues.

Jimmy Rollins broke an 0-for-27 streak by going 2-for-4 and is hitting .207. I think he turns it around.

Casey Kotchman, a major bust in Atlanta, hit his third homer as he hit No. 8 in the order.

Mike Gonzalez pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his third win and Rafael Soriano closed it out for save No. 7.

After a great start to the season, Ryan Madson has not been as good. His ERA was 1.95 on June 14 and it is now 3.46 after allowing three runs in the eighth inning to take the loss against the Braves.

J.A. Happ went seven innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, two walks, and struck out five in a no-decision. He has a 2.96 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

Aaron Rowand hit his 9th homer and is batting .298 with 35 RBIs and has settled into the leadoff spot.

Todd Wellemeyer has been awful lately, but he pitched well to beat the Giants. He went 7 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, walked one and struck out six. He is 7-7 with a 5.44 ERA and 1.66 WHIP.

Ryan Franklin recorded save No. 19.

If it wasn't for Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder would be most deserving of starting at first base for the NL. Fielder went 2-for-4 with a homer and walk. He is hitting .309 with 21 homers and 75 RBIs.

Mike Cameron went 3-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and a walk. He has 13 homers and 35 RBIs.

Derrek Lee went 2-for-4 with two home runs and seven RBIs. He is batting .285 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs.

Jake Fox hit his third home run. Aramis Ramirez is due back next week, so Fox will see decreased playing time. I think he could get a few starts a week at various positions and he could still have some value in NL-only leagues.

Alfonso Soriano did not play for the second consecutive game to work with the hitting coach. Perhaps the routine "mental break" that has become common.

Geovany Soto hit his 8th homer.

Ryan Dempster beat the Brewers to improve to 5-5. He went 6 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits, four runs -- three earned -- walked two and struck out nine. He has a 4.09 ERA and 1.37 WHIP.

Seth McClung allowed seven runs in 3 1/3 innings and may be replaced quickly by the Brewers.

Mark DeRosa isn't expected to start until Tuesday.

The Phillies pushed back the rehab assignment of Raul Ibanez again, so he won't face the Mets this weekend.

Ryan Garko in line for more time

BY ADAM RONIS

Fresh off a tirade on my Wednesday morning show or late Tuesday night show, depending on your perspective, regarding the poor way the Indians have handled Ryan Garko, manager Eric Wedge said Garko is in line for more playing time. It's about time.

Garko is no star, but he could be a solid fantasy producer. I bet you very few people know that he led the Indians in RBIs last season with 90. He has not got any consistent playing time this season. He hasn't started more than four consecutive games and has started four games in a row six times. How is he supposed to get in a groove?

The team has tried to get him some time in the outfield, but that doesn't help the defense. The big problem is Kelly Shoppach getting time over him. With Shoppach catching, it allows Victor Martinez to play first base and keep his legs fresh.

But Shoppach clearly had a career year last year and has been awful so far. Shoppach hasn't played great defense, especially struggling with his throws. In 41 stolen base attempts, he has thrown out just eight runners.

Shoppach had 21 homers last season, but he struck out 133 times in 352 at-bats. He had a very high BABIP of .359, so you knew regression was coming this season. Shoppach is hitting .200 with six homers and 19 RBIs in 145 at-bats with 52 strikeouts and a .328 OBP.

Garko has a knack for driving in runs. He is batting .260 with eight homers and 32 RBIs in 173 at-bats with a .353 OBP. Travis Hafner will get most of the time at DH, so Garko will have to play first. If Garko is available in your league, consider adding him.

Fantasy baseball: Wrap of late games and news

BY ADAM RONIS

It was only fitting that Jair Jurrjens gave up a run before allowing a hit against the Phillies. He has pitched well all season and doesn't have much to show for it but got a lot of run support from the Braves tonight. He allowed an unearned run in the fourth and didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning. He went seven innings and allowed one hit, one unearned run, walked four and struck out 6. He is 6-6 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 74/38 K/BB ratio in 102 1/3 innings.

I'm not sure many people realize how good Jose Contreras has been since he returned from the minor leagues. Contreras defeated the Indians by going eight innings and allowed five hits, two runs, walked one and struck out eight. He is 3-7 with a 4.84 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. But since he came up from the minors, in five starts he has pitched 37 1/3 innings and allowed 24 hits, nine earned runs, walked six and struck out 29. He is 3-2 in that span and should be owned in most leagues.

Johnny Cueto allowed just one hit, but could only go six innings because he walked four and struck out eight and threw 108 pitches. He didn't allow a run and got the win over the Diamondbacks. He is 8-4 with a 2.69 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

Adam Wainwright was terrific for the Cardinals tonight, but got a no-decision. He went nine innings and allowed six hits, one run, walked three and struck out 12. He has a 3.32 ERA and 1.32 WHIP.

Matt Cain opposed him and was solid. He went seven innings and allowed six hits, one run, walked three and struck out three. He has a 2.48 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

Ron Washington said Frank Francisco is back as the closer and he blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning. He allowed two hits, two walks, three runs and a homer. He got the win as the Rangers scored two in the ninth. He has been on the disabled list twice with a shoulder injury, so keep an eye on him and hold on to C.J. Wilson.

Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI and stole his 12th base. He left the game with a finger injury and will have an X-ray on his right middle finger.

Martin Prado will play second base everyday for now. He has been hot and went 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. That means Kelly Johnson is on the bench.

Cole Hamels was awful against the Braves. He four innings and allowed nine hits, seven runs, walked two and struck out one to fall to 4-5 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.47 WHIP. He has a high BABIP and a good K/9 and BB/9, so as long as he's healthy, I'd buy low.

Jimmy Rollins has gone 27 at-bats without a hit.

There was a time this season when many thought Derrek Lee's power days were done. Lee had six homers and 20 RBIs in June and he began July by hitting his 12th homer of the season. He is hitting .282 with 41 RBIs in an offense that has struggled.

Randy Wells has pitched very well for the Cubs. He improved to 3-3 with a win over the Pirates. He pitched seven innings and allowed six hits, one run, one walk and struck out four. He has a 2.43 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with a 45/14 K/BB ratio in 63 innings.

Kevin Gregg got his 14th save.

Garrett Jones will get a chance to play often for the Pirates. He started in leftfield, hit third and went 0-for-4.

Francisco Cordero got save No. 19.

Alex Rodriguez was the DH against the Mariners and went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs. He has 13 homers and 41 RBIs. Johnny Damon hit his 15th homer.

Andy Pettitte went seven innings and allowed six hits, two runs, walked one and struck out five to beat the Mariners. He is 8-3 with a 4.25 ERA and 1.50 WHIP.

Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth for save No. 20.

Colby Rasmus hit a walkoff homer in the 10th inning to give the Cardinals a 2-1 win over the Giants. He went 2-for-5 and is batting .270 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 233 at-bats.

Chone Figgins went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI, walk and his 24th stolen base. He is batting .312 with 56 runs.

Juan Rivera hit a three-run, game-tying homer in the top of the ninth off Frank Francisco. He has 14 homers and 46 RBIs with a .304 average. He should be owned in all leagues.

Hank Blalock won the game in the ninth inning with a walk-off two-run homer. He went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs. He is batting .245 with 16 homers and 35 RBIs.

Ervin Santana is likely to return Friday.

Nelson Cruz left tonight's game in the sixth inning with a stiff back.

Fantasy baseball: News, notes and wrap of early Wednesday games

BY ADAM RONIS

The overhaul of the Nationals continues. Elijah Dukes was sent to Triple-A Syracuse and the rumors are he will be traded. He is batting .244 with six homers and 30 RBIs in 193 at-bats.

Brandon Webb may pitch this season. He visited three different specialists and all recommended that he doesn't need surgery on his right shoulder right now. He hopes to return by September.

Mike Aviles will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

Alex Gordon is 2-for-7 with a homer and walk in his rehab assignment with Single-A. He will go to Triple-A Omaha on Friday and could return next week. He won't be 100 percent and may need occasional days off as he recovers from hip surgery.

Koji Uehara has a partially torn flexor tendon and is expected to miss up to eight weeks.

Josh Hamilton shagged fly balls and took batting practice with the Rangers Tuesday. He'll go on a rehab assignment at Triple-A today and he hopes to return to the Rangers Saturday.

Aramis Ramirez is expected to return Monday. He will play three games at Single-A beginning Friday.

Mark DeRosa left Tuesday's game with a left wrist injury. He said he felt a little tweak while swinging and missing. He hit off a tee indoors the next inning and it didn't feel right. He is day-to-day.

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Frank Francisco is ready to return to the closer role.

Hanley Ramirez is sizzling right now. He went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. He is batting .345 with 26 doubles, 50 runs, 13 homers, 58 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.

Cody Ross went 2-for-4 with his 14th homer and has 48 RBIs with a .274 average.

Poor Jordan Zimmermann. On almost any other team, he would get more recognition. He has pitched well and has nothing to show for it. He went six innings and allowed six hits, two runs, one walk and struck out six against the Marlins in a no-decision. He has a 4.52 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 75/21 K/BB ration in 75 2/3 innings. He deserves a roster spot in mixed leagues and just pray the Nationals can get him a few wins.

Josh Johnson went just 3 1/3 innings, but you can breathe easy. He didn't leave due to injury. He didn't have great control as he threw 49 of his 89 pitches for strikes and allowed five hits, one run, four walks and struck out three in a no-decision.

Marlins manager Freddi Gonzalez said he will use matchups to determine who will close. I say put your money on Leo Nunez, who got his second consecutive save with a scoreless ninth inning, including two strikeouts. Dan Meyer got the last two outs of the 8th inning, but walked two.

Evan Longoria started after sitting Tuesday with a sore hamstring and went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He will get some days off as the team is being very cautious with his hamstring.

Adam Lind's breakout season continues. He went 2-for-4 with a home run and is batting .315 with 16 homers and 53 RBIs.

Vernon Wells got a "mental break" after he went 2-for-16 in his past four starts and is hitting .244.

Russell Martin is also in the middle of a three-game mental break. When is my break coming?

Scott Rolen extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a 2-for-4 day with his sixth homer. He is hitting .333.

Ricky Romero threw eight scoreless innings against the Rays, allowing four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. He is 6-3 with a 2.85 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. He has a 61/24 K/BB ratio in 72 2/3 innings. He has allowed three earned runs or less in five consecutive starts, including two straight with no runs. He has a 54 percent groundball rate and a 29 percent fly ball rate, but he has a very high strand rate of 85 percent. Ride the hot hand.

James Shields pitched well, but two solo homers in the 8th inning made his line appear a little worse. He went 7 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, five runs -- four earned -- walked one, allowed three homers and struck out eight. He is 6-6 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.27 WHIP.

The Mets broke a five-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the Brewers. Mike Pelfrey had one of his better starts of the season with 7 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed six hits, two walks and struck out six for the win. He is 6-3 with a 4.26 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

Francisco Rodriguez allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for save No. 21.

Yovani Gallardo was the tough-luck loser. He went seven innings and allowed five hits, one run, walked two and struck out 12. He is 8-5 with a 2.75 ERA and 1.15 WHIP.

David Wright was supposed to get an off day and started going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

After blowing a 10-1 lead Tuesday night and losing 11-10, the Red Sox scored four runs in the ninth to tie the score and won 6-5 in 11 innings over the Orioles. Kevin Youkilis hit his 14th homer and has 47 RBIs with a .314 average.

Josh Beckett went seven innings and allowed six hits, five runs, two walks and struck out five. He has a 3.67 ERA and 1.22 WHIP and will be one of the better fantasy pitchers the rest of the way.

After blowing his second save of the season, Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 20th save.

Jason Bay struck out in all five at-bats and went 0-for-15 with 9 Ks in the series.
Brad Bergesen has pitched very well for the Orioles lately. He went at least eight innings for the fourth time in four starts and was in line for the win. He allowed four hits, one run, walked none and struck out six. He has a 3.53 WHIP and 1.16 WHIP.

Geroge Sherrill has been very good since his job was threatened, but he blew his third save of the season allowing two hits, three walks and two runs in 2/3 of an inning.

Joe Mauer went 3-for-3 with two walks and is batting .393. Can he hit .400?

Michael Cuddyer hit his 12th homer.

Joe Nathan got save No. 21.

Justin Morneau left the game in the 7th inning with a groin injury.

Gil Meche was better after two awful starts, but still not good. He went six innings and allowed six hits, three runs -- two earned -- walked five and struck out five. He is 4-8 with a 4.20 ERA and 1.45 WHIP. Be worried about an injury.

Jason Hammel pitched very well in June for the Rockies and had another good outing in a 1-0 loss to the Dodgers. He threw an eight-inning complete game and allowed five hits, one run, walked none and struck out five. He has a 3.90 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.

Clayton Kershaw can be dominant but too many walks prevent him from going deep in games. He has terrific stuff, but is still erratic with his control. He threw five scoreless innings and allowed one hit, walked five and struck out five in a no-decision. He is just 21 and didn't pitch above Double-A in the minors. Still, he needs to be owned in all leagues.

Jonathan Broxton struck out two in a scoreless inning for his 19th save.

Brandon Inge didn't start as he continues to battle soreness in both knees.

Jack Cust hit his 14th homer and Jason Giambi hit No. 11.

Justin Verlander fell to 8-4 with a loss to the A's. He went six innings and allowed six hits, four runs, one walk and struck out six. He has a 3.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.

Dallas Braden beat him going seven innings with three strikeouts and one walks, while allowing five hits and one run. He is 6-7 with a 3.13 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.

Mike Lowell placed on disabled list

BY ADAM RONIS

The Red Sox placed third baseman Mike Lowell on the 15-day DL with a right hip strain. He took a shot in the hip Monday. First baseman Jeff Bailey was recalled to take Lowell's roster spot. He may see minimal at-bats as Kevin Youkilis shifts to third base.

Milledge, Hanrahan traded to Pirates

BY ADAM RONIS

The Nationals traded outfielder Lastings Milledge and reliever Joel Hanrahan to the Pirates for outfielder Nyjer Morgan and pitcher Sean Burnett. Milledge, 24, had 14 homers and 61 RBIs last season and began the season as the Nationals centerfielder and leadoff hitter. It quickly failed and he was sent to Triple-A after just seven games as he went 4-for-24. Milledge broke a finger while at Triple-A and has missed 1 1/2 months. He began a rehab assignment last week.

Hanrahan lost the closers job twice as he blew five saves in 10 chances.

Morgan, 29, is hitting .277 with a .315 on-base percentage. He has two home runs, 27 RBIs and 18 stolen bases. He will likely hit leadoff and improve the Nationals' defense. Morgan should start in centerfield and Elijah Dukes and Josh Willingham will split time in rightfield.

Burnett had a 3.06 ERA in 38 games out of the bullpen.

The Pirates called up outfielder Jeff Salazar from Triple-A to take Morgan's roster spot. He hit .265 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs at Triple-A. Expect him to play until Milledge is ready to be called up.

The Pirates called up outfielder Garrett Jones from Triple-A to take the place of Eric Hinske, who was traded to the Yankees for two minor leaguers. He hit .307 with 12 home runs. 49 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 277 at-bats.

Khalil Greene back on disabled list

BY ADAM RONIS

Cardinals shortstop/third baseman Khalil Greene was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this season with social anxiety disorder. He missed 19 games the first time and was activated on June 18. Righthander Clayton Mortensen was recalled to take his roster spot. Greene is hitting .200 with five homers and 19 RBIs. Greene went hitless in his last 13 at-bats against the Mets and it frustrated him. He sat out Friday and Saturday and went 0-for-3 Sunday.

Fantasy baseball: Sunday wrap and news

BY ADAM RONIS

Maybe everyone should get a concussion to get them going. Well, maybe not. It hasn't worked for Ryan Church, but it has helped Aaron Hill. Hill missed the final four months of last season due to a concussion and that made him fall off the radar of many. I was shocked to see him fall so late in mock drafts and real drafts. He hit 17 homers two years ago and that is why I told people to draft him. Hill hit two more homers and is batting .305 with 19 homers and 56 RBIs.

He is not going to hit for a lot of power, but Scott Rolen could help your team if you need average or have an injury (Adrian Beltre). Rolen went 2-for-3 and is hitting .387 this month. He is batting .333 with five homers and 29 RBIs.

Francisco Liriano has started to pitch better and had one of his better outings in quite some time. He went seven innings against the Cardinals and allowed four hits, two runs, two walks and struck out six. He is 4-8 with a 5.62 ERA and 1.52 WHIP. If you are at the bottom of the standings and need to roll the dice to shake up the team, consider trading for Liriano while his value is low.

Joe Nathan got one out for save No. 19.

Justin Morneau hit his 17th homer and has 61 RBIs.

Brad Lidge allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth inning before getting the next three outs in a one-run game to record his 14th save.

Zack Greinke got his 10th win of the season by beating the Pirates. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, walked none and struck out three. He is 10-3 with a 1.95 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. He has a 114/18 K/BB ratio in 115 1/3 innings. He threw 80 pitches and didn't return after a 59-minute rain delay.

Joakim Soria got save No. 9.

Pablo Sandoval has been real hot this month and he went 1-for-3 with a run before leaving the game due to a stomach virus. He is batting .340 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs.

Nate Schierholtz started his sixth consecutive game and went 4-for-5 with his third homer. Consider him in NL-only leagues.

Ryan Sadowski made his major league debut and beat the Brewers with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, three walks and struck out two.

Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs.

I ran out of room in today's fantasy column for waiver wire pickups, but Jonny Gomes should be considered. He has been hitting well and playing lately and he has power. He hit his fourth homer.

Asdrubal Cabrera returned from the disabled list today. He played shortstop, hit leadoff and went 1-for-5.

Micah Owings went six innings and allowed five hits, one run, four walks and struck out four to beat the Indians. He is 5-8 with a 4.63 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. A 50/42 K/BB ratio in 83 2/3 innings isn't good.

Chipper Jones hit his 9th homer and has 33 RBIs with a .289 average.

Brad Penny allowed three earned runs or less for the fourth consecutive start, but still tool the loss against the Braves. He went six innings and allowed six hits, two runs, no walks and struck out two. Both runs came on homers. He is 6-3 with a 4.79 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.

For the third consecutive start, Tommy Hanson didn't allow an earned run and it came against the Reds, Yankees and today against the Red Sox. He went six innings and allowed two hits, two walks and struck out two. He is 4-0 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with a 18/17 K/BB ratio in 31 innings.

Not only is Troy Tulowitzki hitting for power, but he is running wild on the base paths. He went 1-for-2 with two runs and two walks and his 11th stolen base. He was also caught stealing.

Mike Gonzalez allowed one run and struck out two to get his 9th save.

Nick Johnson returned to the lineup after missing time with a shin injury and went 0-for-5.

Adam Dunn hit his 19th homer and has 53 RBIs, but his average is down to .257.

John Lannan allowed three earned runs or less for the sixth consecutive start.
He went 7 1/3 innings and allowed six hits, three runs, three walks and struck out two to beat the Orioles. He is 5-5 with a 3.45 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.

Mike MacDougal pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.

B.J. Upton is starting to hit for power. He hit his fourth homer this month and stole his 28th base. He went 2-for-4 with two runs and is up to .249 after a bad start.

David Price was better, but still not impressive in victory. He went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two hits, one run, walked five and struck out four. He is 2-2 with a 3.93 ERA and 1.55 WHIP.

It is pretty clear that J.P. Howell is the Rays' closer. He got two outs on strikeouts for save No. 5.

Curtis Granderson went 3-for-4 with his 18th homer. Brandon Inge also hit his 18th homer.

Magglio Ordonez was back in the lineup after sitting Saturday and went 0-for-4.

Fernando Rodney picked up save No. 17.

Jose Valverde blew his fourth save by allowing two runs in the ninth and took the loss.

Alexei Ramirez went 3-for-5 with his 10th homer.

Jermaine Dye hit his 18th homer and has 45 RBIs.

John Danks was very good for the fourth straight start. He went seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits, walked four and struck out five. He is 6-6 with a 4.08 ERA and 1.28 WHIP.

Mark Ellis returned from the disabled list and went 1-for-4.

Aaron Cook allowed one earned or less for the fourth time in five starts to beat the A's. He went eight innings and allowed nine hits, one run, one walk and struck out four. He is 8-3 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

Huston Street got save No. 19.

Matt Kemp hit his 10th homer. He is hitting .311 with 41 RBIs.

David Aardsma picked up save No. 16.

Adrian Beltre went 1-for-4 with an RBI and is expected to undergo surgery some time this week.

Juan Rivera hit his 12th homer and has 41 RBIs.

Ryan Doumit is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Tuesday and could return July 5.

Josh Hamilton will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A tomorrow and could return later in the week.

Antonio Bastardo will miss his next start and the Phillies could call up Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A to start Thursday.

The Nationals are sending Shairon Martis down to Triple-A when Scott Olsen returns from the DL.
