Fantasy football notes from early games

BY ADAM RONIS

There are certain things that you can count on in fantasy sports. Great stats from any players facing the Lions, a Rich Harden injury and an Ahman Green injury. It happened today and that loud cheer you hear is from Steve Slaton owners (myself included). Green got carries early in the game and had 13 carries for 39 yards. Green will miss the next two weeks with a left knee injury and will have an MRI Monday. Steve Slaton got the carries late in the game and had a season-high 21 for 73 yards. The team is being cautious with Slaton's touches. For the second consecutive week, Slaton didn't have a catch. He usually makes the most of his touches.

If you own Andre Johnson, I hope it's in a PPR league. If not, you must have a poster of Kevin Walter and throw darts at it. Johnson had 10 catches for 116 yards. while Walter had another TD with seven catches for 93 yards. Walter has 7 TDs and Johnson has three.

Is that Matt Cassel at quarterback or Tom Brady? Cassel goes over 400 yards for the second straight week. He went 30 of 43 for 415 yards with 3 TDs, 1 INT, and rushed for a TD. He is looking much better.

Chad Pennington had one of his best fantasy days going 24 of 41 for 341 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT and rushed for a TD.

The emergence of Cassel has been huge for Randy Moss, who had eight catches for 125 yards with 3 TDs. Good job if you bought low on him or stuck it out with him all season.

Sage Rosenfels can put up the yards and move the team down the field, but you know a poor decision and interception will eventually come. It did against the Browns as he went 24 of 32 for 275 yards with 1 TD and 2 INTs.

Brady Quinn, who played despite fracturing his index finger last week, went 8 of 18 for 94 yards with two INTs and was removed from the game. He said the finger didn't have anything to do with his poor performance. Derek Anderson came in and went 5 of 14 for 51 yards with 1 INT. Quinn will start in Week 13.

Trent Edwards came through with a performance that no one expected, even against the Chiefs defense. He went 24 of 32 for 273 yards with 2 TDs and rushed for 38 yards on six carries with 2 TDs. Who started him?

Was there really any doubt that the Lions would relinquish a 17-0 lead? Does anyone think they will win a game? Poor Calvin Johnson. He would get so much more press if he was on another team. He's played with several quarterbacks this season in a poor offense and still puts up solid numbers. He caught three passes for 66 yards and a TD, on a pass Daunte Culpepper threw up and Johnson used his leaoing ability to haul it in.

Warrick Dunn took advantage of the matchup against the Lions with 14 carries for 90 yards and a TD and five catches for 37 yards. Cadillac Williams saw action and had 16 carries for 27 yards.

The return of Tony Romo has instilled life into my football season. What a difference he makes. He looked much better against the 49ers. He went 23 of 39 with 341 yards and 3 TDs. It certainly helped Terrell Owens, who had seven catches for 213 yards with 1 TD.

Brett Favre has played really well the last few weeks. He's not gambling and making as many risky throws as he did earlier in the season. He threw a lot of quick slants and it killed the Titans. He went 25 of 32 for 224 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT.

Talk about making the most of your opportunties. Leon Washington had eight carries for 82 yards with 2 TDs.

I am a little concerned about the Titans running game. I know the Jets run defense is excellent and they threw a lot after falling behind, but this is the third consecutive week they have struggled. It was a small sample size here as Chris Johnson had 10 carries for 46 yards and LenDale White had one carry for minus-1 (was he at the buffet?). He said he wasn't even paying attention to the game on the sidelines. Yeah, that's the way to get more time. So how do you fix things? A Thursday game against the Lions.

What a shock. Justin Gage had one catch for 37 yards.

The names are in the hat and this week's Ravens running back is.....Le'Ron McClain, who had 18 carries for 88 yards with a TD.

Donovan McNabb was benched after going 8-for-18 for 59 yards with 0 TDs and 2 INTs. He has really struggled the last few games, but Kevin Kolb wasn't much better going 10 of 23 for 73 yards with two INTs.

Shaun Hill went 21 of 33 for 303 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT. He has some good matchups down the stretch, so think about him.

Tyler Thigpen turned it over three times. He went 17 of 31 for 240 yards with 3 TDs, 2 INTs and a fumble. He also gained 29 yards on 3 carries.

Marshawn Lynch has looked good. He only has one 100-yard game, but he scored again. He also had five catches for 25 yards.

Larry Johnson had 81 yards on only seven carries.

Josh Reed had five catches for 50 yards with a TD.

There aren't many things worse than watching the Rams. Marc Bulger left after the first series with a concussion and Trent Green made my head ache as he went 16 of 30 for 219 yards with 4 INTs.

Jake Delhomme said after the game that he injured his elbow. He is coming off Tommy John surgery.
