No saves in Mets pen

BY ADAM RONIS

So you felt good after seeing Aaron Heilman notch two saves over the weekend and in desperate need of saves, you added him. How are you feeling today? I said when Billy Wagner was placed on the disabled list, there were no good options in the Mets bullpen for saves. Everyone assumes when a closer goes down, you have to get his replacement. There are certain scenarios where there are no good options and the Mets are an example.

Heilman blew his third save of the season and took the loss to the Pirates today and is 2-7. He allowed two hits, one walk and three runs in 1/3 inning. He can look real good at times and others he looks awful. I wouldn't count on him right now. He threw three scoreless innings over the weekend to get two saves against the Marlins and he couldn't close out the Pirates who were in their final game of a long road trip.

Joe Smith allowed two runs in the seventh and Pedro Feliciano allowed one. Duaner Sanchez pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Scott Schoeneweis got the final two outs of the ninth. Expect one of them to get the call in the next save situation. Wagner is eligible to return one week from today and he could rehab with the Brooklyn Cyclones this week. Stay away from Mets relief pitchers this week. Would it hurt to give Eddie Kunz a shot? I know he doesn't have much major league experience, but obviously there aren't great options in the Mets pen right now. Lets see what the kid has.
