Bobby Valentine pulls a Gary Carter

Here's what Bobby Valentine said when asked by ESPN 1050's and FOTFS (Friend of The Final Score) Andrew Marchand if he would be interested in managing the Mets again:
"I am working for a team that needs me and wants me as their man. I love it here, but I am an American and love great challenges. I was a in a Met uniform in the '70s, '80s, '90s, 2000, and would love to be there in the next decade."
Um, how is that different than Gary Carter saying he's available to replace Willie Randolph -- when Willie still had the job?
Yes, I know Jerry Manuel doesn't have a contract, but the job is his if he and the Mets can agree on terms. Couldn't Bobby V. wait until -- and if -- the Mets say they are opening the door to other candidates? They haven't said that.
Carter got killed by the NY media. I have a hunch Bobby V. won't. He is much beloved by certain members of the press here.
I've never met him. I have eaten at his sports bar in Stamford, Conn. It's good food at a good price.
If he gets the Mets job, do I have to stop eating there for ethical reasons? Maybe I'll ask Gwen Ifill.
Bet she thinks it's OK.
