COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.
I've never dealt with Eddie Murray before, but having followed baseball my whole life I'm well aware that as a player he wasn't exactly known as media-friendly. Let's just say I'm pretty sure he never won a Good Guy award for being available to reporters.
But there he was at Doubleday Field this morning with the Wizard of Oz and George Brett, answering reporters' questions.
I spent almost all of the half-hour media availability talking with Brett, who is a great storyteller, and Ozzie, who is as gracious as they come. By the time I made it over to Murray, time was running out. Someone asked him about Shea Stadium going away, and he laughed. "Shea's about two dozen years late," Murray said.
Guess he doesn't have fond memories of those wonderful 1992 and 1993 Mets teams.
