Give Billy Wagner credit for not backing down

I was on Mets off day duty yesterday, so I listened in on Billy Wagner's weekly radio spot on 1050 ESPN Radio. I wondered whether the Mets closer would back off his criticism of (a) the way the team played after falling behind 7-0 Wednesday and (b) the way Oliver Perez just stunk.

As you might have read in my story in today's newspaper, Wagner expanded bigtime on Perez, and he claimed there a reason for his harsh words. "I’m not saying it because I don’t like him," he said. "I’m saying it because I expect [Perez] to be better." Although Wagner did say "I’m probably the least favorite guy in the clubhouse" because he speaks his mind, give him credit for not being afraid to stand by his words, however controversial that they may have been.
