Tim gets the last word on the Paul O'Neill debate

Thanks to everyone who chimed in both here and on the Yankees beat blog. It was a spirited debate.
I didn't check with Jim, but this was the comment that I thought was the most reasonable on the O'Neill issue. It's from Tim:
I love PON just as much as the next guy but he is not worthy of having his number retired.
I don't agree with you [Anthony] that if a player has played on another team they are automatically exempt from having their number retired, but they should have spent 80% or more of their time with the Yankees and contributed most of their milestones with the team as well.
Paul will always be remembered as a great player, but there are plenty of great players in the Yankees past that don't have their number retired and there is nothing wrong with that. Nettles is the perfect example.
Thanks to gonyc.com for the photo.

I guess you'll have to unretire Roger Maris' number under the 80 percent rule.
