Observations from Mets' Jackie Robinson news conference
I attended the news conference at Shea Stadium in which the Mets unveiled their plans for the Jackie Robinson Rotunda - the Mets essentially are making the grand hall entrance into Citi Field a museum for Jackie Robinson. Very nice touch, especially because Fred Wilpon says it will be open to the general public even on non-game days.
Anyway... one thing I can live without is the politicians at these events. The guy who represented Mayor Bloomberg spoke about how he was thinking about Jackie Robinson on the drive over, blah, blah, blah, and all I thought about then was, 'You didn't plan what you were going to say until your drive here? Wow, talk about procrastination.' The guy who does community relations for Citi Field used the same tactic - thoughts while driving in - and I wondered whether he, too, put off his speech until the last second.
One other political observation: there is a big sign outside Citi Field from the state of New York regarding the construction site. There is obvious tape over where the name Eliot Spitzer used to be, replaced by David A. Paterson, Govenor. Pretty funny.
