Miguel Cairo, the former Yankee and Met, is still looking for his first hit of 2008. He's appeared in six games and is 0-for-5. I'm in the process of trying to figure out if Cairo is the only position player who was on an Opening Day roster, is still active and is without a hit. But what's interesting about Cairo is that this is nothing new for him. Last year he didn't get his first hit of the season until May 9!
Here's a Miguel Cairo story for you. When the Yankees at the last minute did not offer him arbitration after the 2004 season so they could sign Tony Womack, they announced it at 11 p.m. I still thought it was worth calling Cairo, as it was long assumed he'd return as the starting 2B. But when Cairo answered, he played dumb and said he was sleeping. Oops.
UPDATE: Rob Mackowiak of Washington and Gary Bennett of the Dodgers also are hitless. Mackowiak s 0-for-12 and Bennett is 0-for-5. So it's a three-horse race.
