I'm still baffled by Seahawks cutting Shaun Alexander

This is what makes the NFL so foreign to me. Shaun Alexander just two years ago was widely referred to as one of the top two running backs in the league. Hands-down the best? Arguably so.

Signed a $62 million, eight-year contract after the 2005 season when he was the MVP. But there are no guarantees in the NFL, and after two straight injury-filled years Alexander is cut loose.

How big was Alexander in 2005?

Former Yankee Andy Phillips went to college with Alexander at Alabama and they had classes together. So they kept in touch through the years. When Phillips was getting ready for a big game as a Yankee - I don't remember which - he said he received a call from one of Alexander's assistants telling him Shaun wished him good luck.

Maybe I should get an assistant.

Jim: You have an assistant: Anthony Rieber

Touché.

Alexander will catch on, and, if healthy, will be a steal for someone, even if he doesn't regain his old form.

Next story: the travails of Chad Johnson.
