Orel Hershiser is a pretty good poker player, apparently

oreltheauthor.jpgOrel Hershiser, who for some reason I still remember appearing in shampoo commercials in 1988, is now in the quarterfinals of the National Heads-Up Poker Championship in Las Vegas.

I wonder if Orel still wants to be a manager some day. I remember at one point him saying he wanted to do that, and Wikipedia reminded me he was passed up for the Dodgers job when Grady Little got it in 2005. Orel now works for ESPN.

I wonder what the bosses at ESPN think of one of their baseball analysts playing in a tournament that will be televised on NBC?

Last year Shannon Elizabeth from American Pie fame lost in the semis to eventual champion Paul Wasika. She deserved to win as she had him all in and ahead at least once before he sucked out on her (poker term, dont delete me!).
That's the great thing about poker, if I played the best player in the world I would win probably at least 10 times. Where if I played Michael Jordan one on one in basketball...I would probably only win 7 or so ;)

Nice MJ line.

Thanks. I thought you'd get a laugh.
