The Daily News has a story today saying that the Nets' move to Brooklyn may not be completed until the 2010-11 season is well under way -- and even that timetable is "very aggressive," according to Bruce Bender, executive VP of Forest City Ratner.
This doesn't surprise me much, as the project has been delayed several times. As recently as January, the Nets acknowledged that their original plan to move into the new Brooklyn arena for the start of the 2009-10 season was unrealistic, saying their hope was to complete the move during the calendar year 2010.
"While that's the goal, if it is not met, then it would end up being calendar year 2011," Bender said in the Daily News story.
The latest issue is the refiling of an eminent domain lawsuit that already has been rejected in federal court and at the appellate level. The U.S. Supreme Court also refused to hear the case. While there appears to be little doubt that Ratner will prevail in the new case, it may not be resolved until sometime next year -- presenting another potential delay in groundbreaking on the arena site.
The real question: How will all of this affect LeBron's decision among the Knicks, Nets and Olympiakos if he opts out in 2010? (Sarcasm alert.)
